Creed - Rocky's Legacy ( English for "Rocky's Legacy" ; original title: Creed ) is an American boxer film by director Ryan Coogler from 2015 and at the same time an offshoot of the film series and therefore not part of the Rocky film series itself November 2015 premiered in the United States and opened in German cinemas on January 14, 2016. The film is a co-production by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , Warner Bros. Pictures , New Line Cinema and Chartoff-Winkler Productions and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The main roles are Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson and Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa in a supporting role . For his portrayal, Stallone received the Golden Globe Award for best supporting actor and was also nominated for an Oscar .

action

1998 in a California juvenile detention center: Adonis "Donnie" Johnson, an illegitimate son of the late ex-heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, receives a visit from Creed's widow. Mary Anne offers to take him in and adopt him. Seventeen years later, Donnie quits his job as a finance professional and wants to become a professional boxer. Mary Anne, whose husband lost his life in the fight against Ivan Drago 30 years earlier, is strongly against it. When Donnie's admission to the Los Angeles Elite Delphi Boxing Academy is rejected, he moves to Philadelphia. There, Rocky Balboa, his father's old friend and former rival, runs the “Adrian's” restaurant opened by his late wife.

Donnie asks Rocky to train him. Rocky is reluctant to return to boxing after making a one-off comeback and suffering from brain trauma during his career as a fighter. He finally agrees and trains Donnie from now on with some of Rocky's long-time friends at the "Front Street Gym" in Philadelphia to prepare him for professional boxing. During this time, Donnie also met and fell in love with the aspiring singer Bianca.

Donnie, who now fights under the name "Hollywood Donnie", soon becomes better known, and word gets around that he is Apollo Creed's illegitimate son. Meanwhile, Rocky gets a call from world heavyweight champion "Pretty" Ricky Conlan, who is being forced into retirement because of a threatened prison sentence. He offers Rocky to make Donnie his final challenger, provided that Rocky changes his name to Adoni's "Hollywood Donnie" Creed. Donnie initially refuses, because he wanted to be successful on his own. But he is finally ready to fight under his father's name.

Rocky later learns that he has non-Hodgkin lymphoma . However, he is unwilling to undergo chemotherapy because he remembers that it did not help save Adrian when she developed ovarian cancer . Due to his diagnosis and the fact that his best friend and brother-in-law Paulie, Adrian's brother, is now buried next to Adrian, and the memory of Apollo and his old trainer Mickey, he is confronted with his own mortality. Donnie notices how shocked Rocky is at the diagnosis and asks him to seek treatment.

Donnie is now fighting Conlan in his hometown Liverpool. There are many parallels to the first fight between Apollo and Rocky 40 years ago. Before stepping into the ring, Donnie receives a present from Mary Anne, new gym shorts with the American flag, similar to the ones Apollo and later Rocky wore. To the surprise, the audience is on Donnie's side and keeps their distance from Conlan. However, Conlan wins after the judge's decision "Split Decision", after which two judges see Conlan in front and the third Donnie (as Apollo at the time kept his title by "Split Decision" against Rocky). But Donnie has earned the respect of Conlan and the crowd. HBO commentator Jim Lampley's closing words about the fight: "Ricky Conlan is the winner of the evening, Adonis Creed is the winner of the hearts." Conlan praises Donnie for his performance and says he is the future in light heavyweight.

production

development

On July 24, 2013, it was announced that MGM is planning a Rocky spin-off with Ryan Coogler, director of Next Stop: Fruitvale Station , a seventh film in the Rocky series, and Coogler is co-writing the script with Aaron Covington to write a film. The film is supposed to tell of a man, played by Michael B. Jordan (initially as Adonis Creed), who wants to follow in the footsteps of his late father, Apollo Creed and is looking for a mentor who is now retired, former champion Rocky Balboa. In an interview by the online magazine deadline.com with Sylvester Stallone, the latter said that it took director Ryan Coogler two years to convince him to take on the role of Rocky Balboa again. The film was produced by original Rocky producers Robert Chartoff, Kevin King Templeton, Sylvester Stallone and Irwin Winkler. Nicolas Stern took on the role of executive producer. In June 2015, producer Robert Chartoff died in Santa Monica , California , so he could not see the premiere of the film in November 2015.

Filming

The filming, with a budget of around 35 million US dollars, took place from January 26th to April 3rd, 2015 in Philadelphia , Las Vegas , London and Liverpool . The first filming began in England, where it was filmed during a soccer match between Everton FC and West Bromwich Albion at Goodison Park in Liverpool. In early February, an empty store in Philadelphia was converted into a boxing studio, where some training scenes were filmed. Further filming took place in a location called "Victor Cafe", which was converted into "Adrian's" restaurant. From February 24-27 and March 3, further filming took place at Sun Center Studios in Aston Township, Delaware County .

Film music

This time, the music for the film does not come from the film composer Bill Conti , as in the majority (Rocky I, II, III, V and Rocky Balboa) of the film series , but was contributed by the Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson . Nevertheless, the pieces of music "Going the Distance" and "Gonna Fly Now" from the Rocky Soundtrack Contis were used in the film.

Marketing and gross profit

If I can do it, you can do it too, ”said Stallone to his fans.

The film grossed more than $ 173 million in theaters around the world.

Reviews

Andreas Busche from Spiegel Online writes that Creed - Rocky's Legacy is an indication that the literally “dominant white narratives in US cinema are slowly being told out” and that the film is “not just a continuation of the Rocky myth”, but rather "a newbeginning". He says: "A handover to the next generation, but above all a socio-cultural description." He continues:

“'Creed' rarely deviates from the classic box film scheme, but there is method behind it. By recreating one scene after the other from the original, Coogler is consistently reconstructing the Rocky tale. With Michael B. Jordan, currently the most interesting African-American actor of his generation, the pathos of the sports drama is converted into a narrative of emancipation. [...] Coogler has succeeded in giving a largely written-off film series a contemporary look. He also proves his technical ability in the final title fight between Adonis Creed and 'Pretty' Ricky Conlan (former world champion Tony Bellew), who sets new standards in boxing films in terms of dynamism and realism. "

Carsten Baumgardt from Filmstarts.de awards 4 out of 5 stars and draws the conclusion:

“Now 'Fruitvale Station' director Ryan Coogler is continuing Rocky's legacy and is doing it very cleverly: Apollo Creed's son is at the center of his spin-off 'Creed - Rocky's Legacy', while Sylvester Stallone's Rocky can be seen as the dominant supporting character - so the director combines the series tradition with a fresh, modern perspective to create an electrifying feel-good boxer drama.
