Rocky II is an American boxer film from 1979 and the sequel to Rocky , who made it internationally known in 1976. Stallone wrote the script again and this time also directed.

action

Rocky II is thematically linked to the first part. Although Apollo Creed and Rocky said in unison immediately after the end of the fight that they did not want revenge , at least Creed changed his mind already in the hospital and told the press. Rocky only got by by luck . On the other hand, Rocky does not want to contest a rematch at first, which his partner Adrian clearly likes.

Rocky proposes marriage to Adrian after he is discharged from the hospital at the zoo, the two marry, Adrian becomes pregnant and the newly married couple buys a house. Rocky even receives offers to act in commercials, but it turns out that he can barely read and the recordings turn into a farce. He then tries to learn to read better and would like to find a job in the office, which, however, does not work due to his poor education. His brother-in-law Paulie found him a job in the slaughterhouse, which he later lost because manpower had to be cut and he did not work there long enough.

Meanwhile, Creed works doggedly on a rematch and doesn't even hesitate to provoke Rocky. Creed receives diatribes from various states accusing him of manipulation, among other things. Rocky, meanwhile unemployed, wants to start boxing again and visits Mickey. When Rocky tells his old trainer that he wants to start boxing again, Mickey tests him to show him that his right eye is so damaged that he won't see the punches coming. Rocky, visibly moved, asks Mickey for a job in his boxing club, he wants to help out a little. At the same time, Adrian resumes her old job in the pet shop.

Creed provokes Rocky in a TV interview and claims again that Rocky only got by by luck . He alleges that he is afraid of a rematch. Rocky talks to his wife because he really wants to get back in the ring. When Mickey visits him, the rematch is finally organized. His trainer asks Rocky that he has to change completely and become left-wing sender in order to be able to better protect his bad eye and to confuse Creed. But Adrian does not agree with the fight at all, which is very stressful for Rocky and prevents effective training. When his pregnant wife falls into a coma due to overexertion, Rocky is completely dead and his trainer tells him that he won't stand a chance against Creed.

Only when the baby is born, his wife wakes up from the coma and tells him that he should win the fight, Rocky starts to train doggedly and is in top form on the day of the fight. However, initially he has no chance against Creed. He only wins a round towards the middle of the fight, but Creed continues to score after that and is unassailable in the lead before the last round. Creed's trainer asks him to skip the infight, since Rocky is the stronger boxer in this, but Creed is determined to end the fight with a knockout victory. Mickey, on the other hand, asks Rocky to switch from left to right to end the fight in his favor. In the last round an unbelievable drama takes place: Both boxers are completely exhausted, both go to the ground and are counted. Creed can't get up, but Rocky gets back on his feet at the "9" - and wins the fight.

Rocky did it: He is world heavyweight champion and defeated the hitherto undefeated Creed. After the fight, he thanks God and says in the ring that - apart from the birth of his son - this is the most moving moment in his life. Then he addresses his wife, who sees him at home on TV: "You see Adrian, I made it!"

Reviews

"[...] Infusion of the first Rocky spectacle [...] Again great fight scenes with a very committed Stallone, the rest is talk about the newcomers, filmic passable, ideologically undemanding."

- Adolf Heinzlmeier and Berndt Schulz in the lexicon 'Films on TV'

“The somewhat simple, transparent dramaturgy doesn't have much reference to reality, but it conveys positive emotional values. Instead of careful figure drawing, the 'Rocky' sequel - now staged personally by Stallone - mainly delivers sentimentality and strength. "

The Wiesbaden film evaluation agency awarded the production the title valuable .
