The Expendables 2

The Expendables (engl. "The Entbehrlichen") is an ensemble - action film in which Sylvester Stallone directed and wrote the screenplay with David Callaham. The film pays tribute to the action films of the 1980s and 1990s and has a number of well-known actors of the genre in the lead roles. These include Dolph Lundgren , Mickey Rourke , Jet Li, and Jason Statham . Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis also have short appearances.

action

After the mercenary group around Barney "The Schizo" Ross successfully freed hostages from a boarded ship in the Gulf of Aden , Ross receives from a certain "Mr. Church ”a new assignment: He and his group of mercenaries, the“ Expendables ”, are supposed to free the small island of Vilena from the military dictatorship there .

Ross and Lee Christmas scout the island as scouts. They get to know Sandra, the daughter of the ruling General Garza, who is fighting against her father's dictatorship. When they meet his men, they have to flee head over heels. Sandra decides to stay on the island.

It turns out soon that Garza just a straw man by James Munroe, an ex- CIA - agent is. He wants to rule the island through Garza and cultivate cocaine . The Expendables also find out that the order to overthrow Garza comes from the CIA, which wants to regain control of the island and the cocaine. Because the mercenary troops are supposed to die as a pawn sacrifice , the mercenaries decide against the assignment.

Plagued by remorse, Ross sets out again to at least save Sandra. His team of mercenaries supports him. Meanwhile, Garza and Munroe escalate, whereupon Munroe shoots Garza. After a hard fight, the “expendables” around Barney can defeat the military regime and Munroe.

Different versions

In addition to the theatrical version, a version shortened by five minutes was made for home cinema exploitation, which was approved for ages 16 and up. After Stallone announced a Director's Cut in 2010, it took until May 31, 2011 for this version to be seen for the first time. It premiered on US television. In Germany, this version was released on February 22nd, 2012 on Blu-Ray and DVD with ten minutes longer.

The Extended Director's Cut is a "real" Director's Cut and was created by Sylvester Stallone and represents his personally preferred version of the film. In addition to additional plot scenes, the version also contains alternative footage and in some cases a different cut sequence. Musically, the Director's Cut was supplemented by Sully Erna with the song Sinner's Prayer . Shinedown also contributed the song Diamond Eyes .

production

script

The actual story idea for the film came from the American screenwriter Dave Callaham , who wrote a script for a mercenary action film, back then under the title Barrow . Sylvester Stallone had the intention to shoot an ensemble film, which is peppered with various action stars. He adapted Barrow's script to his script with the new title The Expendables .

Casting

Some of the cast during a promotional press conference, center: Sylvester Stallone, San Diego 2010

Stallone offered Jean-Claude Van Damme a role, but Van Damme declined because he saw no substance in his role and questioned the concept presented by Stallone; in his opinion, Stallone should act as a savior in South Central . Ultimately, this role was filled with Dolph Lundgren.

The character of Hale Caesar was originally supposed to be cast with the co-star and villain from Stallone's Demolition Man , Wesley Snipes . The role was then rewritten for Forest Whitaker , who was replaced by 50 Cent due to scheduling difficulties . Former NFL player Terry Crews later got the job.

Steven Seagal was asked if he would be ready for a cameo . But he declined because of negative experiences with producer Avi Lerner .

Until May 2009, the script was rewritten more often, with Liam Hemsworth's role removed.

The role of Mr. Church, the Expendables hires was first offered to Schwarzenegger. But this refused, because of his political career and in favor of a smaller cameo. Kurt Russell was then offered the role , but his agent replied that Russell was not currently interested in ensemble acting . It took Stallone several months to find an actor for the role after filming. Rumors suggested that the role was being offered to Stallone's friend Bruce Willis , who was busy with cop out . In August 2009, Willis' cast was confirmed.

Filming

From March 28, the film was shot in Rio de Janeiro , Mangaratiba , Niterói , Guanabara Bay , Colônia Juliano Moreira and Parque Lage , among others . After filming was interrupted from April 25 to May 11, filming continued in Elmwood , Louisiana and downtown New Orleans in the French Quarter , St. Peters Street, Fort Mccomb, Claiborne Avenue and Interstate 10 . The shooting officially ended on July 1, 2009. On October 26, 2009, however, the joint scene of Bruce Willis , Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone was re-shot in the Hollywood Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles . This is the first time all three have appeared together in the same scene.

music

Brian Tyler composed the music for the film. Tyler worked with Stallone on John Rambo back in 2008 . Sully Erna from the band Godsmack wrote a song for the film called Sinner's Prayer . This can be heard briefly in the official trailer. The hard rock band Shinedown also contributes a song specially written for the film ( Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom) ), which can also be heard in the trailer and was released on June 22, 2010. A version of Thin Lizzy's The Boys Are Back in Town can be heard during the credits . Other hard rock songs in the film include Keep on Chooglin and Born on the Bayou from Creedence Clearwater Revival , Keep Your Hands to Yourself from The Georgia Satellites and Mississippi Queen from Mountain .

Trivia

  • Sylvester Stallone suffered a hairline crack in a cervical vertebra caused by Steve Austin during filming , which is why a metal plate had to be inserted into the cervical vertebra area. This is his second serious injury after Dolph Lundgren crushed his chest while filming Rocky IV . But since many fans believed this was just a promotional trick for the film, Sylvester Stallone published the corresponding X-ray images on the Internet.
  • On June 2, West Coast Customs delivered three identical, individually modified 1955 Ford F100 trucks to Sylvester Stallone for the film. One truck was used for a stunt, another for the blue screen , and the last one remained in Stallone's private ownership.
  • A comic book was released as a prequel to the film by Dynamite Entertainment in May 2010. The comic was written by Chuck Dixon and illustrated by Esteve Polls. The cover is by Lucio Parillo. The comic is about the Expendables mission in Nigeria.
  • 2013 was titled This Is not The Expendables XXX a Porno - parody .

reception

The Expendables received mixed feelings from critics. Cinema saw Stallone bowing "to the testosterone cinema of the video cassette era" "without computer effects and dramatic highs".

The film service saw a film "intended as a reference to action cinema of the 1980s", which "alternates indecisively between winking B-movie allusions and drastic depictions of violence".

The two Internet rating portals IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes rated The Expendables with 6.5 points and 41%. (As of December 28, 2014)

Sequels

So far, two sequels have been produced, both of which were able to present an extended cast. In 2012, The Expendables 2 appeared with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris, among others . Two years later, The Expendables 3 found its way into theaters with new cast members like Mel Gibson and Wesley Snipes . A television series has also been in production since 2015. Sylvester Stallone and Avi Lerner are involved as executive producers. Actors involved are not yet known.

synchronization

In the dubbed German version, both Stallone and Schwarzenegger are spoken by their regular speaker Thomas Danneberg . Bruce Willis and Dolph Lundgren are both commonly voiced by Manfred Lehmann . In the The Expendables film series, however, Lundgren got a different spokesperson, Oliver Stritzel , even if the two roles have no joint conversations.
