Steve Austin (* 18th December 1964 in Austin , Texas , as Steven James Anderson ) is a retired American wrestler and actor .
In addition to engagements in World Championship Wrestling and Extreme Championship Wrestling , his most important place of activity was the World Wrestling Federation. Austin was one of the most successful actors there during the so-called Attitude era , which ensured the WWF's victory in the quota war against the WCW. As an actor he worked in some well-known film and television productions. Austin is a former WWE Champion and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009 .
Life
Childhood and youth
Steven James Anderson grew up with his adoptive parents in Jackson County, Texas, in the small town of Edna. From them he temporarily took over the family name Williams. In high school he was a member of the National Honor Society and later received a scholarship in football to the University of Austin.
In 1987 he finally dropped out of college and began working at a loading dock near the Port of Houston .
Private
Austin was married three times and is a multiple father. All three marriages have since been divorced. His first wife was Kathryn Burrhus, from whom he divorced on August 7, 1992 after almost two years of marriage, in order to be able to marry his ring companion Jeannie Clark ("Lady Blossom") in December of the same year. In 2000 he married Debra McMichael , also known from the wrestling business , the ex-wife of the footballer and wrestler Steve McMichael . The separation took place in 2003 and developed into a "mud battle" due to the alleged brutality of Austin. Debra accused her ex-husband of abuse of anabolic steroids . His next relationship with Tess Broussard also ended unhappily. The police had to intervene as he apparently became violent here too.
Since Austin himself is an adopted child and never met his birth parents, he campaigns for children who are dependent on outside help or who are seriously ill. His adoptive father, Ken Williams, supports him in this. In December 2007, he adopted his ring name Steve Austin as a real name. Austin's greatest personal passion is deer hunting , for which he sometimes retires into the wild for days.
Wrestling career
Beginnings
Austin started his career in 1989. This was followed by appearances at the United States Wrestling Association and the World Class Wrestling Association .
World Championship Wrestling (1991–1995)
In 1991 Austin switched to World Championship Wrestling (WCW) . Since there is already a wrestler named Steve Williams aka Dr. Death , he changed his name to that of his hometown, Austin. As "Stunning" Steve Austin , he won his first title on June 3, 1991, the WCW World Television Championship . He held the title for 329 days and gave it to Barry Windham on April 27, 1992 . On May 23, 1992 Austin was able to win the title again.
1992 Austin formed with Flyin 'Brian the tag team "Hollywood Blondes". With this he won the NWA World Tag Team Championship twice in 1993 . Austin also feuded with Flyin 'Brian, Barry Windham and Lord Steven Regal against Ric Flair , Arn Anderson and Paul Roma .
In mid-1995, Austin was fired from the WCW. The then Vice President of the WCW, Eric Bischoff , described Austin as not "marketable".
Extreme Championship Wrestling (1995)
After his release, Austin went to Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) through his former WCW manager Paul Heyman (who was now one of the managing directors ). He was called by ECW immediately after the WCW contract expired and a little later signed a short-term contract until the end of the year. After the contract expires, a decision should be made about a longer-term commitment. Initially he called himself Extreme Superstar Steve Austin and started a feud with The Sandman . During this short ECW time, his alter ego from “Extreme Superstar” was developed into “Stone Cold”. Austin also took over the beer drinking in the ring and the hall from the Sandman, which later became typical for him in the WWF.
Austin repeatedly gave out public swipes against the WCW and its management. He harbored a particular grudge against Bischoff, which he personally mentioned several times.
Despite his brief engagement, Austin was one of the top ECW superstars. At the ECW major event "November To Remember" 1995 he lost the match for the title against Sandman and Mikey Whipwreck. A little later he left this league for WWF.
World Wrestling Federation / Entertainment (since 1995)
The Million Dollar Corporation and Austin 3:16 (1995–1997)
After the contract with the ECW expired, Austin went to the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in late 1995 . There he first appeared under the name "The Ringmaster" and was managed by Ted DiBiase .
From the spring of 1996 he appeared again as Steve Austin . In June 1996 he won the King of the Ring tournament . In the final he defeated Jake "The Snake" Roberts .
“ You sit there and pound the Bible, you say your prayers ... and it didn't get you anywhere! Talk about psalms, talk about John 3:16… Austin 3:16 says, I tore your ass off! "
In autumn 1996 Bret "The Hitman" Hart returned to the WWF after a long break. Soon afterwards there was a feud between Austin and Hart and his Stable Hart Foundation (consisting of Bret Hart, Owen Hart , Jim Neidhart , The British Bulldog and Brian Pillman). During the feud, Austin won the Royal Rumble on January 19, 1997 , eliminating Bret Hart last. This resulted in a match between Austin and Hart at WrestleMania 13 , which Hart won. The feud ended at the Summer Slam on August 3, 1997 , when Austin defeated Owen Hart and won the WWF Intercontinental Championship .
Feud against Vince McMahon (1996-1999)
In late 1997, a brief feud against The Rock followed . When Bret Hart left the league in late 1997, the big push came for Steve Austin. He feuded against Shawn Michaels and Triple H in early 1998 . On March 29, 1998, at WrestleMania XIV, Austin defeated Michaels and won the WWF World Heavyweight Championship . On June 28, 1998, he gave the title to Kane . A day later Austin was able to defeat Kane and win the title again.
In late 1998, Austin began another feud against The Rock. In the course of the feud, Austin was able to win the WWF World Heavyweight Championship for the third time.
In 1998, Austin began a feud with Vince McMahon . McMahon feuded Austin with Pat Patterson , Gerald Brisco , Sgt. Slaughter , Dude Love / Mankind , Paul Wight , The Rock , Shane McMahon , Kane and The Undertaker . In July 1999, Austin won the feud. This feud is the most successful of the WWF / WWE to this day. In addition to the formation of the D-Generation X , it is considered the basis of the Attitude era .
Austin was injured in late 1999 and did not return until October 2000
The Two-Man Power Trip and Resignation (1999-2003)
In 2001 Austin started a feud with Triple H. On February 25, 2001, at No Way Out, Triple H defeated Austin in a Three Stages of Hell match and was able to win the feud.
In 2001 Austin and Triple H formed the Tag Team Two Man Power Trip . With this Austin feuded against The Brothers of Destruction ( The Undertaker & Kane ). On April 29, 2001, Austin and Triple H defeated the Brothers of Destruction to win the WWF World Tag Team Championship . They gave the title to Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho . In the summer of 2002, Austin left the WWE.
However, he returned in the spring of 2003. He then denied a feud against The Rock, which Austin lost. The Rock won a match between the two at WrestleMania XIX. This match was supposed to be Steve Austin's last. After WrestleMania, Austin ended his active career.
