D-Generation X (also DX ) was a wrestling table and later a tag team of Promotion World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It existed from 1997 to 2000 and from 2006 to 2010. As a stable, the D-Generation X was formative for the so-called "Attitude" era of the WWE.

Beginnings and advancement

Michaels shows the "X"

The first meeting of the D-Generation X took place on September 20, 1997 as part of the Pay Per View One Night Only . The starting line-up included wrestlers Shawn Michaels , Triple H , Ravishing Rick Rude and Chyna . True to its own motto "You make the rules and we'll break 'em" , the group subsequently appeared emphatically rebellious and broke every rule set by the authorities of the doctorate . Obscene gestures in which the members of the DX pointed at their genitals with their arms crossed in front of their stomachs, and curses had previously been unthinkable in the family-friendly WWE, so that the DX seemed all the more rebellious on the one hand, but also the overall picture of the promotion in the beginning “Attitude” era shaped. The WWE tried to make up for the lost ground in the battle for the ratings against their main competitor at the time, the WCW , through a gloomy atmosphere, characterized by more complex storylines and the coarse language of the actors . The DX contributed significantly to the improvement of the ratings of the WWE programs in 1998, so that one could overtake the WCW and become No. 1 in the wrestling business again.

Within the WWE shows, the D-Generation X feuds with the Stables Nation Of Domination and Corporation were fought out. The WWE owner Vince McMahon himself was the group's main opponent. Before WrestleMania XIV in March 1998, Mike Tyson , who at that time had no boxing license and money problems after the ear bite incident in the boxing match against Evander Holyfield , was appointed as a new member of the D- generation X presented. The signing of Tyson again brought the WWE a lot of mass media attention . Tyson appeared as a special referee at the major event WrestleMania XIV , changed sides according to the script and took away DX member Shawn Michaels. Tyson then left WWE, and Shawn Michaels, who needed time to recover from a serious real-life injury, left the group.

A little later, Rick Rude also left the WWE for WCW. The promotion filled the ranks with "Road Dogg" Jesse James and "Bad Ass" Billy Gunn (known in the tag team as New Age Outlaws ) and the X-Pac, who had returned from WCW . At the same time, the group's image began to change: if they had previously embodied the role of the villain (" heels "), they have now been made crowd favorites.

During this time, WWE used the DX against business competition by bringing its members into contact with fans in front of halls where the competition was staging shows, recording the events and incorporating anti-WCW statements into their programs. On May 11, 1998, WWE even had her pull up a military vehicle in front of the CNN One Center in Atlanta, the headquarters of WCW. However, such actions were discontinued in the summer of 1998.

In January 1999 the group began to disband, gradually joining the opponents. At first, Chyna was supposed to change sides to the corporation , and a little later, Triple H, until then the leader of the D-Generation X , was also allowed to play the renegade. In May it also wrote the tag team The New Age Outlaws apart to in July with a match, which storyline standard license income from the D-Generation X - Merchandise to bring walked down the decay process to an end.

McMahon-Helmsley era

On October 25, 1999, the D-Generation X reunited as the Heel group. Triple H and X-Pac appeared in and supported a tag team match led by Jesse James and Billy Gunn. They stayed together until mid-2000. Only Billy Gunn had to retire due to an injury break, which was sold as an exclusion in front of the camera. The group now served as a hook for building up Triple H as the main eventer . Triple H now led the new DX with Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley, his real wife and daughter of WWE owner Vince McMahon. Other members were again the New Age Outlaws and X-Pac. It was the beginning of the so-called "McMahon-Helmsley-Era" of the WWE, in which the group had a great influence in the promotion both in front of and behind the scenes. With the rise of Triple Hs as a single wrestler, however, the importance of the group declined. In November, the members appeared as a group for the last time and lost an eight-man tag team match against the Radicalz . After that, the group did not appear in WWF shows for the time being.

In July 2002, the doctorate used the story of the D-Generation X as a hook for a storyline. Triple H offered Shawn Michaels, who had returned to the WWE, a reunion, but attacked him and thus initiated the planned and long-term feud program.

Re-establishment as a tag team

Triple H and Shawn Michaels as D-Generation X

From April 2006, the WWE began preparing for a re-appearance of the D-Generation X. Michaels and Triple H, whose feud program had long since ended in 2002, began to occasionally use the typical gestures and sayings of the group in the shows, which initially sparked discussions.

At the RAW show on June 12, 2006, Shawn Michaels intervened as part of the storyline in a match of Triple Hs against the group Spirit Squad . This established a match between the D-Generation X, newly formed as a tag team, against the Spirit Squad in the pay-per-view Vengeance . At the victory celebration in the ring, Michaels and Triple H were allowed to mock Vince McMahon and the next storyline was initiated against Vince and his son Shane McMahon. This feud program was expanded to include several events.

After this had ended in favor of the D-Generation X , a series of matches against Edge and Randy Orton followed . After both wrestlers could not play together due to real knee injuries in spring and summer 2007, it took until November 5, 2007, before they made a one-day comeback as a tag team. Since then, the WWE had let the two wrestlers play individual matches as D-Generation X over and over again .

The stable was reactivated again at the major event SummerSlam 2009 . At Pay-Per-View TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs , Shawn Michaels and Triple H were allowed to win the Unified Tag Team Championship together for the first time in the history of D-Generation X by having Chris Jericho and Big Show in a TLC Match . In the RAW issue of December 21, 2009, Hornswoggle was named the official " DX mascot" . On February 8, 2010 at RAW, the tag team lost to The Miz and Big Show and thus the title reign.

The final end came at WrestleMania 26 , as Shawn Michaels had to retire after a losing match against The Undertaker according to the storyline.

On July 23, 2012, the stable appeared again as part of the 1000th episode of RAW in an Angle against Damien Sandow. In addition to Triple H and Shawn Michaels, the former members Road Dogg, X-Pac and Billy Gunn could also be seen.
