Chyna (* 27. December 1969 in Rochester , New York as Joan Marie Laurer ; † 20th April 2016 in Redondo Beach , California ) was an American bodybuilder , wrestler , actress and porn actress .
As a wrestler, Joan Laurer was best known for her appearances in the WWF from 1997 to 2001 and marketed as the “ninth wonder of the world”. In November 2007 she officially changed her name to Chyna . She won the WWF women's title once during her career and was the only woman three times in the WWE Intercontinental Championship, which was actually reserved for men .
Wrestling career
Beginnings
Joan Marie Laurer trained at Wladek "Killer" Kowalski's wrestling school in Salem, Massachusetts . She made her debut in 1995 and worked for various independent leagues as Just Joanie or Joanie Lee .
World Wrestling Federation (1997-2001)
When she met WWF wrestlers Triple H and Shawn Michaels in a bar in 1997 , they were impressed by their appearance and helped her to gain a foothold in the World Wrestling Federation. In her first role as Chyna , bodyguard of the D-Generation X group , she was initially allowed to intervene in matches in their favor.
The day after the 1999 Royal Rumble , she was made a heel and later part of the Corporation and Corporate Ministry groupings , allowing her to work with the league's top stars.
At the end of 1999 there was another change of heart and a feud with Jeff Jarrett over the WWF Intercontinental Championship began. At the PPV No Mercy on October 17, 1999, she took the title from Jarrett in his last match for the WWF and was therefore the first - and so far only - woman to hold the title. She received it two more times later. In 2000, she appeared briefly at Chris Jericho's side before working with Eddie Guerrero and becoming his storyline friend. In autumn 2000, the doctorate separated the team again.
At the same time, Laurer's photo series in Playboy was also featured in front of the camera by depicting a parody of the Parents Television Council . After that, Laurer took a short break from wrestling. She returned a few weeks later and began a feud program with wrestler Ivory for the WWF Women's Championship. At the 2001 Royal Rumble , Chyna faked a neck injury to give her a break. Her highly advertised return culminated in Wrestlemania XVII, where she won the title with a squash victory.
The WWF planned to set up Chyna as the workhorse of their women's division, but she was neither satisfied with the payment offered nor did she just want to compete against other women. After the contract negotiations were broken off, Chyna no longer appeared on TV and finally left the doctorate on November 30, 2001.
New Japan Pro Wrestling (2002)
Since then, her wrestling career has been very limited. She still competed in some wrestling events, such as New Japan Pro-Wrestling in Japan , and some celebrity boxing tournaments.
Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2011)
On May 3, 2011, Chyna, at the age of 40, celebrated for the promotion Total Nonstop Action Wrestling at TNA iMPACT! her return to wrestling. She played together with Kurt Angle at Sacrifice on May 15, 2011, a victorious match against her old rival Jeff Jarrett and his wife Karen. After it became known that she had made another pornographic film, TNA ended the collaboration.
Outside of wrestling
Joanie Laurer took nude photos, including for Playboy . In 2002, after she left WWF, she also appeared in a soft porn called Joanie Laurer: Nude Wrestling Superstar , which was produced and distributed by Playboy . With her partner at the time, Sean Waltman (active in the WWF / WWE under the ring name X-Pac), she shot a sex video entitled 1 Night in China , which was inspired by Paris Hilton's video 1 Night in Paris , which was published a few months earlier . Together with those involved, Chyna received the 2006 AVN Award in the Best Selling Title of the Year category . On June 22, 2011, Vivid released the porn film Backdoor to Chyna , which won another AVN Award for Best Celebrity Sex Tape in 2012. In May 2012, Vivid also released Avengers XXX - A Porn Parody , a parody of Marvel's The Avengers in which she plays She-Hulk.
She also participated in the MTV documentation Celebrity Rehab at a drug rehabilitation part.
In January 2001, Harper Entertainment published the autobiography of Laurer and Michael Angeli about their lives as a strong, always fighting woman and wrestler. The book made it to the # 1 bestseller in several Amazon sections. Additionally, Chyna was a playable character in a total of 5 wrestling video games
death
On April 20, 2016, Laurer was found lifeless at her home in Redondo Beach , Los Angeles County , California after a friend informed police. According to her manager, she had been treated with drugs for anxiety and insomnia for a long time. A fatal mix of psychotropic drugs, painkillers and alcohol was later given as the cause of death.
On April 28, 2016, NBC Los Angeles announced that according to Laurer's manager Anthony Anzaldo, the wrestler's brain would be made available to science. A research team led by forensic pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu would like to explore the effects of chronic-traumatic encephalopathy on the brain, a syndrome from which Chris Benoit, who died in 2007, and other wrestlers, ice hockey and football players also suffered.
Her ashes were scattered across the Pacific Ocean six months after her death .
