The WWE Women's Championship was next to the WWE Divas Championship the most important women's title of the wrestling organization WWE and was only awarded to the Women's Division. It was introduced on December 31, 1983 after Moolah sold the NWA World Women's Championship to the World Wrestling Federation. In September 2010, the WWE combined the title with the WWE Divas Championship . On April 3, 2016, the WWE Women's Championship was introduced as a successor. As is common in wrestling, the award was made according to a storyline .

history

The title was introduced on September 18, 1956, then as the NWA World Women's Championship . The Fabulous Moolah defeated Judy Grable in a tournament. In 1984 the title was sold by Moolah, who owned the rights to it, to the promoter of the WWF (World Wrestling Federation, now WWE), Vince McMahon, who renamed the title WWF Women's Championship . The WWE lists Moolah as a record holder at the age of 27, as she does not recognize the title changes within the years of the National Wrestling Alliance .

In 1995, the last reigning title holder, Alundra Blayze, caused a sensation when she switched to direct competitor World Championship Wrestling and threw the WWF title belt into a trash can in front of the camera.

When the WWE was split into two different squads in 2002, both the women's title and the Undisputed WWE Championship were fought on both Raw and SmackDown . Over time, the Smackdown squad fought fewer fights among women, so the title became a Raw title. However, this was never officially determined, so that in November 2005 there was a cross-squad title fight between the then title holder Trish Stratus and the challenger of SmackDown , Melina . The title moved from Raw to SmackDown after Melina was drafted as the reigning title holder in the April 13, 2009 Draft with the title for the WWE Friday Show. 2010 at WWE Night Of Champions the title was combined with the WWE Divas Championship and discontinued.
