Johnnie Mae Young (born March 12, 1923 in Sand Springs , Oklahoma , † January 14, 2014 in Columbia , South Carolina ) was an American wrestler .

Career

Johnnie Mae Young made her wrestling debut in 1939. At the beginning of her career she mainly competed in WWWA and NWA Florida, where she was able to secure the NWA Florida Women's Title and was the first NWA United States Women's Champion. In 1999, Young joined the WWF. She was hardly active in the ring there and concentrated more on comedy segments with Fabulous Moolah . Mae Young managed this when she won the WWF Women's Title at No Mercy in 1999. Until Moolah's death in 2007, the two experienced women appeared again and again in more or less entertaining segments at WWF and WWE. At the 2007 RAW birthday show, Mae made her comeback for the WWE in the opening segment. In 2008 she became part of the WWE Hall of Fame. At the old school edition of Monday Night Raw on November 16, 2010, she had another appearance against LayCool, which she won.

Young was admitted to a hospice on December 30, 2013 for kidney failure . At this point she was already dependent on ventilation . On January 9, 2014, life support was discontinued. Young died five days later on her property in Columbia, South Carolina.
