WWE SummerSlam is an annual wrestling event ofthe US wrestling league WWE in August. Along with the Survivor Series , the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania, it is one of the four largest and most traditional pay-per-view events (Big Four PPVs) of the WWE and has been marketed as the second largest event after WrestleMania for several years. That is why there are also conventions and autograph sessions on the event weekend. The motto of SummerSlam has been "The Biggest Party of the Summer" for several years.

The term the big four (dt. The big four ) is due to the year 1989, when the then-WWF (predecessor of today's WWE) first four PPVs held in a year. Wrestlemania was the first major annual event in 1985, followed by the Survivor Series in 1987, SummerSlam in 1988 and the Royal Rumble as PPV in 1989 (the Royal Rumble had premiered on cable television a year earlier). It wasn't until five years later that the WWE began to expand its PPV offering and shone for the first time in a year with the King of the Ring tournament (which had already been held as a house show event in previous years) between 1993 and 2002 out.

With the first brand separation between RAW and SmackDown! in two separate squads from 2002 to 2011 and since the renewed separation in July 2016, the Big Four are referred to as so-called Cross Brand PPVs , i.e. events at which wrestlers from both squads perform and z. T. compete against each other in matches (" interpromotional match ").

Trivia and Statistics

  • The opening match of SummerSlam 1988, and thus the very first SummerSlam match ever, ended with a time limit draw , i.e. with a tie after the previously set match time had expired. This was the only time in the history of SummerSlam so far.
  • There was no WWE World Championship match at the first two SummerSlam events because Hulk Hogan, as the reigning champion, was involved in tag team matches in both years.
  • To date, SummerSlam 1992 is the only one of the “Big Four” PPVs that has ever been held outside of the American continent. At the same time, it is the SummerSlam with the most ticket sales.
  • The first change in the WWE World Championship took place at the 10th SummerSlam in 1997, where Bret Hart defeated The Undertaker .
  • In 32 Summer Slams that took place, the most important title in the league only changed hands 13 times (7 × WWE Championship , 1 × WCW Championship , 3 × World Heavyweight Championship and 2 × WWE Universal Championship )
  • Brock Lesnar defeated The Rock at SummerSlam 2002 to become the youngest WWE Champion at the age of 25 .
  • Randy Orton became the youngest world heavyweight champion and at the same time the youngest world heavyweight champion in wrestling at SummerSlam 2004 by defeating Chris Benoit at the age of 24 .
  • Brock Lesnar played most of the main main events at SummerSlam, eight times in the last match of the evening.
  • The Undertaker has the most appearances and wins at SummerSlam: He competed a total of 16 times and won 10 matches.
  • Between 2009 and 2014 SummerSlam took place six times in a row at the same venue (Staples Center, Los Angeles).
  • Between 2015 and 2017, SummerSlam took place three times in a row at the same venue (Barclays Center, New York City), and in 2018 it will take place for the fourth time in a row at the Barclays Center in New York City.
