The Scotiabank Arena (until 2018: Air Canada Center ) is a multi-purpose arena in the Canadian city ​​of Toronto , Province of Ontario . It is located on Bay Street not far from the shores of Lake Ontario next to the main train station ( Union Station ) and is owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. and named after the Scotiabank . The hall opened in 1999 with a size of 62,000 m², also known as "The Hangar " because of its external appearance and the former name sponsor Air Canada , is mainly used as a sports stadium. The Scotiabank Arena is the official home arena for the Toronto Raptors in the NBA ( basketball ), the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL ( ice hockey ) and Toronto Rock in the NLL ( lacrosse ). Other cultural events such as concerts and theater performances also take place there.

history

The initiative for building the stadium came from John Bitove, owner of the Toronto Raptors basketball team founded in 1995. The Raptors played in the nearby SkyDome (today: Rogers Center ), which was unsuitable for basketball games. The foundation stone for the basketball hall was laid on March 12, 1997. Shortly after construction work began, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) took part in the project. MLSE was looking for a replacement for the outdated and too small ice hockey rink Maple Leaf Gardens for the Maple Leafs and took over the Raptors' franchise .

The Air Canada Center, designed by the architects Brisbin Brook Beynon, is located on the site of a former sorting center of the Canadian Post Office. The south and east facades of this building remained. A 15-story high-rise office building was built right next to the hall. The Best Buy Theater, a theater hall with 5,200 seats , was also integrated into the building complex . There is also a direct connection to Union Station .

On February 19, 1999, the Air Canada Center was officially opened. A day later, the first NHL game that the Maple Leafs won against the Canadiens de Montréal took place . Another day later, on February 21, the first NBA game was played, with the Raptors playing against the Vancouver Grizzlies . On February 6, 2000, the 50th National Hockey League All-Star Game took place at the Air Canada Center . The lacrosse team Toronto Rock played their first home game on December 21, 2000.

At the end of 2005, MLSE announced a modernization of the western part of the Air Canada Center. The hall is to be connected to the planned urban development project Maple Leaf Square in 2008. Investments of around CAD 500 million are planned. The plan is to have two restaurants, a hotel, a shopping center with fan shops for the Raptors, Maple Leafs and Toronto FC , two 54-story high-rises, a television studio and a public square. The construction work was completed in autumn 2010 and the building complex was inaugurated on October 8, 2010. The NBA selected the Air Canada Center for the 2016 All-Star Game on February 14th of that year. This was the first time the event took place outside the United States.

On August 29, 2017, MLSE announced that the naming rights would be granted to Scotiabank and that the arena would be renamed "Scotiabank Arena" in July 2018. The contract with Scotiabank has a term of 20 years and, according to media reports, is worth $ 800 million.
