The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum , (through sponsorship agreement NYCB Live's Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum ), is a multi-purpose arena in Uniondale on Long Iceland in the US state of New York . The Coliseum is located approximately 30 kilometers from New York City . It was the home of the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL). The then 32 million US dollars expensive Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum was officially opened on 29 May 1972nd The first event in the hall, a basketball game by the New York Nets , took place on February 11th of that year. The hall offers 32 luxurious suites and 6,800 parking spaces are available around the Coliseum. The Coliseum covers 255,000 m² of Mitchel Field , which was formerly a site of the US Army and Air Force.

use

The New York Raiders , the flagship of the World Hockey Association , should initially play their home games in the new arena. The Nassau County but did not consider it to settle a WHA team there and wanted nothing to do with the Raiders. Nassau County hired William Shea to house an NHL team at the Coliseum. The NHL hastily placed a franchise on Long Island ; the New York Islanders . As a result, the Raiders found their home in Madison Square Garden in the shadow of the New York Rangers .

The Coliseum was also the home arena of the New York Saints ( National Lacrosse League ), which played there from 1998 to 2003. The Saints stopped playing in 2004. In the past the New York Arrows and later the New York Express from the Major Indoor Soccer League also played here. Before that, from 1972 to 1977, the Coliseum was also home to the New York Nets of the American Basketball Association , which later also played in the National Basketball Association . First and second round matches of the National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournaments were also held there.

The Coliseum is also used for concerts and other types of shows, as well as for large sales events. Billy Joel , who grew up on Long Island , is one of the most common renters. He usually does several gigs when he's on tour. In the mid-1990s, his own number hung next to the heroes of the Islanders under the roof of the Coliseum, which was supposed to represent his numerous sold-out concerts.

Initially, minor league games took place under the roof until the Islanders franchise became a long-term tenant. In 2005, minor league games took place there again. The Bridgeport Sound Tigers team from the American Hockey League played two home games there. This happened during the lockout . The original capacity of the Coliseum varied between 12,000 and 15,000 depending on the event. In the early 1980s the maximum capacity was increased to 18,100 for concerts. Before the renovation, there was space for 16,234 spectators for ice hockey games, 17,260 for basketball, 17,686 for concerts and 17,686 for boxing and wrestling events.

In the 2018/19 season , the New York Islanders will temporarily return to their old home. The team will play 12 of the 41 regular season home games here, a number that was later increased to 20. The other 21 games will take place in the Barclays Center . In addition, one took place in February 2018 for the first time Tennis Tournament of the ATP World Tour at the Coliseum instead - the New York open .

Redevelopment

The Coliseum was the oldest arena in the NHL after 1968 's Madison Square Garden in New York . With 16,234 places for ice hockey games, the Coliseum is the smallest venue in the North American ice hockey league after the MTS Center in Winnipeg (15,015 places). Aware of this, some officials got together in 2004 to work out and implement a refurbishment plan so that a new arena would be unnecessary. The heart of the Lighthouse Project was a tower that looked like a lighthouse . Other plans included the creation of new residential accommodation and other sports facilities as well as a hotel. The estimated costs amounted to about 200 million US dollars . Local complaints and the NHL lockout in the 2004/05 season meant that only small progress was made in the planning. So it came about that the Islanders considered building a new arena in neighboring Suffolk County .

In the end, the construction plans were shelved and the New York Islanders have been playing their home games in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn since the 2015/16 NHL season . The Long Island Nets basketball team from the NBA Gatorade League will move to the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum for the 2017/18 season. The games of the 2016/17 season will be played by the Nets at the Barclays Center.

On April 5, 2017, the Coliseum reopened after a renovation period of twenty months. The renovation cost 165 million US dollars. Now there are 14,500 seats for basketball, 13,900 seats for ice hockey and up to 16,000 seats for concerts. The modernized arena is officially named NYCB Live's Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum , after the New York Community Bank (NYCB). To mark the reopening, Billy Joel gave a concert in his old home. Joel also gave the last concert in the old Coliseum on August 4th, 2015.

Others

  • During the series of four consecutive Stanley Cup championships of the New York Islanders in the early 1980s , the Nassau Coliseum was referred to by fans as "Fort Neverlose" ("Never Lose").
  • For several years the arena has also been referred to as the “Nassau Mausoleum” by “hostile” fan groups.
  • During city duels between the Islanders and Rangers , who play in the same conference and division, the arena is also often called "Garden East", as Rangers fans make up up to 50% of the audience.
  • Another nickname for the arena is "Bust Palace" which was created in 1972 by Alex Bennett , an entertainer. This was due to the many drug arrests during rock concerts that took place in the arena.
  • Although the hall is in East Garden City, the postal address is in neighboring Uniondale .
