The New York Dragons were an arena football team from New York City, New York that played in the Arena Football League (AFL). The Dragons played their home games at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum .
history
The Dragons were founded in 1995 as the Iowa Barnstormers . For the 2001 season, the franchise was sold to the owners of the New York Islanders ice hockey franchise , Charles Wang and Sanjay Kumar, who moved the franchise to New York and called themselves New York Dragons.
The greatest success in the history of the franchise was the quarter-finals in 2003, 2005 and 2008. They were unable to participate in the ArenaBowl.
Although the Dragons were first in the Eastern Division in 2004 with nine wins and seven losses, they did not reach the playoffs as only the first eight teams were qualified to participate. The AFL only changed this rule the following year, so that automatically the first division was allowed to participate in the postseason.
After the 2008 season, the AFL stopped playing for one season. The Dragons disbanded and waived a starting place in 2010.
The Dragons were the third and so far last arena football team in New York City after the New York Knights (1988) and the New York City Hawks (1997-1998).
