The 2018/19 NHL season was the 102nd season of the National Hockey League (NHL). The regular season ran from October 3, 2018 to April 6, 2019 and was dominated by the Tampa Bay Lightning , who won the Presidents' Trophy as the best point team and recorded 62 victories, as many as only the Detroit in NHL history Red Wings in the 1995/96 season . They also provided Nikita Kutscherow, the top scorer of the league, who was awarded the Art Ross Trophy and who also received the Hart Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player at the end of the season . His compatriot Alexander Ovetschkin of the Washington Capitals won again the Maurice Richard Trophy as top scorer in the NHL.

The Stanley Cup playoffs began on April 10th and ended on June 12th with the St. Louis Blues 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins , which was their first ever Stanley Cup .

Events

As in the previous season, selected regular season games were played in Europe as part of the 2018 NHL Global Series . On October 6, 2018, the Edmonton Oilers met the New Jersey Devils in Gothenburg, Sweden , while the Winnipeg Jets and Florida Panthers faced each other in Helsinki, Finland on November 1 and 2, 2018 . In addition, the Boston Bruins and the Calgary Flames each played a test match in September 2018 as part of the preparation for the season in the Chinese cities of Beijing and Shenzhen . This was followed by the traditional NHL Winter Classic 2019 on January 1, 2019 between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins in the open air at Notre Dame Stadium . The Philadelphia Flyers and the Pittsburgh Penguins faced each other in the 2019 NHL Stadium Series on February 23, 2019 at Lincoln Financial Field, also as part of an open-air game . The 2019 NHL All-Star Game was hosted by the San Jose Sharks on January 26, 2019.

Salary cap

In June 2018, the NHL and gave NHLPA announced that the salary cap ( salary cap ) of 75 to 79.5 million dollars is raised.

Home venues

The New York Islanders play almost half of their home games (20 of 41) at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum , which served the team as their primary home ground until 2015. The Barclays Center , which has been in use since 2015 , only acts as a temporary solution, as a new ice hockey arena is to be built on the site of the former Belmont Park racecourse by the 2020/21 season . In addition, the names of two stadiums will change, the St. Louis Blues arena will now be called Enterprise Center (previously Scottrade Center ), while the Toronto Maple Leafs will play in the Scotiabank Arena (previously Air Canada Center ) from the 2018/19 season .

Entry Draft

The 2018 NHL Entry Draft took place on June 22nd and 23rd, 2018 in Dallas , Texas . With the First Overall Draft Pick , the Buffalo Sabers selected defender Rasmus Dahlin , who became the second first-placed Swede after Mats Sundin ( 1989 ). Andrei Swetschnikow for the Carolina Hurricanes and Jesperi Kotkaniemi for the Canadiens de Montréal followed in second and third place . A total of 217 players were drafted by the NHL teams in seven rounds.
