The 1938/39 NHL season was the 22nd season in the National Hockey League . Seven teams played 48 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Boston Bruins after a 4-1 win in the final series against the Toronto Maple Leafs . After the Montreal Maroons no longer competed for financial reasons, they no longer played in two groups from this season. The outstanding player was the top scorer Toe Blake , who also won the Hart Memorial Trophy . In the playoffs, however, another player came to the fore. After just ten goals in the regular season, Boston's Mel Hill met six times in the playoffs. He earned his new nickname "Sudden Death" Hill in the semi-final series against the Rangers. In the seven-game series, Hill decided three games in overtime, including the last after 48 minutes.
