The 1926-27 NHL season was the tenth season in the National Hockey League . Ten teams played 44 games each. For the first time it was played in two groups. In each group, the third placed player played the quarterfinals against the runner -up, and then played against the leader of the table for participation in the Stanley Cup final . There the Ottawa Senators won twice against the Boston Bruins , two more games ended in a draw.
With the Chicago Black Hawks , the Detroit Cougars and the New York Rangers as the second team in New York, three new teams joined the league that still play in the NHL today. The St. Patricks were supposed to be sold to the US, but Conn Smythe brought together a group of 16 donors who bought the team for $ 160,000, changed the colors to blue and white, and gave the team a new name, Toronto Maple Leafs . The first deaths on the ice almost came about. In the New York Derby, Shorty Green suffered a serious kidney injury during a check. His life was in danger and a kidney had to be removed. Green recovered but never returned to the ice. Boston's coach Art Ross was a colorful personality . He constantly tried to improve the playground equipment. At his suggestion, the NHL introduced new pucks and new goal nets to prevent the puck from bouncing back out of the goal.
