George Hainsworth (born June 26, 1895 in Toronto , Ontario ; † October 9, 1950 ) was a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played for the Montréal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League from 1926 to 1937 .

Career

He began his career in Berlin , later Kitchener. In 1923 he moved as a professional to the Saskatoon Crescents in the Western Canada Hockey League .

On the recommendation of Newsy Lalonde , the Montréal Canadiens were interested in him and on August 23, 1926 he signed a contract there. When he made his debut in the NHL , Hainsworth was already 31 years old. The little man filled the void Georges Vezina had left with the Canadiens . In his first three years he won the Vezina Trophy , but was often overshadowed by the other goalkeepers of his time. This was due to his unspectacular style of play. Where other goalkeepers like Charlie Gardiner excelled with saves, George just stood in the right place and seemed to be able to fend off the shots effortlessly. With this species he was more of a spoilsport, while others became crowd favorites. In the 1928/29 season he spoiled his opponents when he did not concede a goal in 22 of 44 games. To date, no other goalkeeper has had more than 15 shutouts , although almost twice as many games are played per season. In 1930 and 1931 he won the Stanley Cup twice . In exchange for Lorne Chabot , he moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1933 . Here too he was a master of his trade. When it was decided to bet on the young Turk Broda for the 1936/37 season , he returned to the Montreal Canadiens for four games before ending his playing career.

In 1961 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
