Édouard Charles "Newsy" Lalonde (born October 31, 1887 in Cornwall , Ontario ; † November 21, 1970 in Montreal , Québec ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who served from 1917 to 1927 for the Montreal Canadiens and New York Americans in the National Hockey League played.
Career
As a teenager he worked as a printer and reporter for a newspaper in Cornwall. This is where he got his nickname “Newsy”. Even 12 years before the founding of the National Hockey League , Newsy played his first professional ice hockey game in Woodstock at the age of 19. Three years later he was there when the Canadian Athletic Club, the predecessor of the Montréal Canadiens, played their first game on natural ice in the Jubilee Rink. He also played in Toronto, Regina and Vancouver in the early years. With the Canadiens he won his only Stanley Cup in 1916 . He was 30 years old when the NHL was founded, but was one of the top scorers in the early years. He topped the scorer list twice, in the first four years he was always in the top 4. After the fifth season he was sent to Saskatoon for $ 3,500 and the rights to Aurèle Joliat . He returned to the NHL for a game with the New York Americans .
Newsy was not only one of the best ice hockey players of his time, he was arguably the best Canadian lacrosse player of the first half of the 20th century. He made more money with lacrosse than with ice hockey.
The stock market crash in 1929 robbed him of large parts of his fortune.
In 1950 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
