Bondra played in the youth division of today's HK Poprad before he moved to TJ VSŽ Košice in 1986 . There he played with his brother Juraj , together they won the Czechoslovak championship in 1988 .
In the 1990 NHL Entry Draft , the Washington Capitals selected him in the ninth round in 156th place. Just a few months after his draft, he made his debut in North America on October 5, 1990 against the Pittsburgh Penguins . Exactly a week later, Bondra scored his first NHL goal against the New Jersey Devils . He managed his first hat trick in 1990, after which he was voted best rookie of the month for November. His best season to date was 1994/95 when he was the NHL's top scorer in the regular season . But the next 1995/96 season was also very successful, as he became only the fourth player in the Washington Capitals to break the 50-goal mark in one season. He was involved in over 20% of all Caps goals this season. That season he completed seven games for the Detroit Vipers . The 1997/98 season , in which his Washington Capitals reached the final of the Stanley Cup for the first time , he finished as the best overall scorer (regular season and playoffs ). On November 30, 2001, he scored his 398th NHL goal, one more than Mike Gartner made.
After 14 years in the US capital, he was transferred to the Ottawa Senators in 2004 . During his time in Washington he scored a total of 472 goals and 353 assists (825 points). During the NHL - Lockouts he played at HK Tatravagónka Poprad ( Slovakia ). Since his contract with the Senators was not renewed, he then moved to the Atlanta Thrashers . There he played a season in which he reached 39 points. But after only one year he had to leave Atlanta because his contract was not renewed here either. At the beginning of the 2006/07 season , Peter Bondra was not under contract with any team. It was not until mid-December that he was signed by the Chicago Blackhawks . There he shot the 500th goal of his NHL career on December 22, 2006. After the season, as in the previous year, no team signed him. He ended his active career on October 29, 2007 and took over the post of General Manager of the Slovak national team . He completed this by 2011.
