The HK Poprad is an ice hockey team from Poprad , Slovakia , the one in the top division of Slovakia Extraliga plays.
history
The club was founded in 1929 under the name Carpathian Society Poprad and renamed HC Poprad in 1930 . In the 1930s, HC Poprad was one of the best clubs in Slovakia. In 1935, HC Poprad merged with ŠK Vysoké Tatry, founded in 1926, and was called HC Tatry from then on .
From 1945 the club took part in the newly created Czechoslovak State League , from which the club was relegated in 1947. In the following years the club took part in the second-rate Slovak league ( 1st SNHL ) and changed its name in 1948 to Sokol Tatry Poprad and in 1950 to TJ Tatran Poprad . Between 1951 and 1954, the club was back in the first division, but was last in the 1953/54 season and thus rose to the 1st SNHL.
After this relegation, the club played in the second division of Czechoslovakia until 1991. Over the years, he changed his name to Lokomotíva-Vagónka-Stavbár (LVS) Poprad , later to Telovýchovnej jednoty (TJ) Pozemné stavby (PS) Poprad , in 1988 to ČH Poprad and 1990 to ŠKP PS Poprad . During this time, the club was able to celebrate four Slovak championships, 1970, 1981, 1985 and 1991.
After 37 years in the second division, the ŠKP PS Poprad made it to the first division in 1991 and belonged to this division until the division in 1993. In the Slovak Extra League, HK Tatravagónka Poprad reached third place in the championship in 1997 and 1998. At the end of the 2005/06 season, the team achieved the greatest success in the club's history, the Slovak runner-up . After this success, the club was renamed HK Aquacity ŠKP Poprad , as the operator of Aquacity Poprad became the club's main sponsor. In addition to these league successes, HK Poprad has won the Tatra Cup twelve times .
Due to the withdrawal of the main sponsor, the association has been renamed HK Poprad again since 2010 and was again Slovak runner-up in 2011.

Home ground
HK Poprad plays its home games in Zimný štadión Poprad , which today (2012) has a capacity of 4,500 spectators. The building was completed in 1973 and had a capacity of 5,500 seats by 2006. After a renovation, the capacity was reduced to 4,500 by creating additional seats.
