The HK Nitra is a Slovak ice hockey team from Nitra , who in 1926 was founded as AC Nitra and again since 2003 Slovakian Extraliga plays. The club plays its home games in the 5300-seat Nitra Aréna .

history

The history of Slovak ice hockey began in the High Tatras region , where the clubs AC Nitra, SK Banská Bystrica , HK Poprad and HC Slovan Bratislava were founded to play ice hockey in four cities . In 1933, AC Nitra won the Tatra Cup for the first time . Bigger successes could only be celebrated in the eighties, when the then second-class 1st Slovak ice hockey league ( 1st SNHL ) was won in 1983/84, 1986/87 and 1988/89. In the 1989/90 season, AC Nitra then rose to the 1st Czechoslovakian league (first class), but ended the season in 13th place, which also meant relegation. In the following years the championship in the 1st SNHL was reached twice (1991/92 and 1992/93), in 1993 they qualified directly for the newly founded Slovakian extra league. Since the beginning of the Extraliga, Nitra only played three seasons not in the Extraliga.

At the end of the 2002/03 season, HK Nitra was able to celebrate promotion to the extra league with the championship in the first division . However, the team achieved the greatest success in the club's history in the 2005/06 season, when they finished the main round of the Extraliga first and took third place in the play-offs . In the same season Nitras Juniors won the championship title in the U18 extra league.

In 2016 the club was able to win the national championship for the first time .
