Antonín Stavjaňa (born February 10, 1963 in Gottwaldov , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who has played for many years in the 1st division of Czechoslovakia for HC Dukla Trenčín and HC Vsetín in the Czech extra league. Since retiring as an active player, he has been working as an ice hockey coach.

Career as a player

Antonín Stavjaňa began his career at HC Dukla Trenčín, for which he made his debut in 1981 in the first division, the top division of Czechoslovakia. In 1986 he moved to TJ Gottwaldov and was selected in the NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames in the 12th round in 247th place. In his very first season with Gottwaldov, he knew how to convince and was honored as the best defender as well as elected to the All-Star-Team of the Extraliga. He returned to Trenčín for a season before moving back to Gottwaldov, which has now been renamed Zlín.

After the borders were opened in autumn 1989, Stavjaňa decided to move abroad in the summer of 1990. First he played for two years for Jokipojat Joensuu in Finland , where he was promoted from the I divisioona to the SM-liiga with the team . In 1992 he moved to Sweden and played for the HV71 in the Elitserien , before returning to the Czech Republic in 1994.

Between 1994 and 1998 he won five Czech championship titles with HC Vsetín and formed the defensive backbone of the club with goalkeeper Roman Čechmánek . In addition to winning the championship several times, Stavjaňa was voted best defender twice in these years and was appointed to the league's all-star team several times. After the season 1997/98 he resigned from active competitive sport.

International

Stavjaňa made his debut for a selection of the Czechoslovak Ice Hockey Federation at the U18 European Championship in 1981, where he won the silver medal. Between 1985 and 1990 he played for the Czechoslovak national team in the ice hockey world championship every year and won one gold medal (1985) and three bronze medals. Other career highlights were participation in the 1988 Winter Olympics and the Canada Cup in 1987 and 1991 .

The two states Czech Republic and Slovakia emerged from Czechoslovakia in 1993, so that from that point on Stavjaňa was internationally eligible to play for the Czech national team. Between 1993 and 1996 he took part in three world championships and won another gold and bronze medal. He was also appointed to the squad for the 1994 Winter Olympics , where the selection of the Czech Republic disappointed and only finished fifth.

After finishing his playing career, Stavjaňa worked as an ice hockey coach, initially at HC Zlín. In the very first season he reached the playoff final of the Extraliga with Zlín, but failed at his old club, HC Vsetín . He later took over the coaching position at HC Oceláři Třinec before returning to HC Zlín until the middle of the 2002/03 season. In addition to his work at club level, he was assistant coach for the Czech national team at the men's ice hockey world championships in 2003 and 2004 .

Until 2005 he was then behind the gang at HC Vsetín before he was signed for the 2005/06 season by the Slovak first division club HK Nitra . With Nitra he achieved the greatest success in the club's history, winning the regular season, but was sacked during the play-offs. He was then head coach at HK Dukla Trenčín from 2006 to 2008 .

In the 2008/09 season he was again in charge of HC Oceláři Třinec, before he was dismissed in February 2009 and became assistant coach and later head coach of HC Slovan Bratislava . Between summer 2010 and January 2011 he was head coach of HC Energie Karlovy Vary . From summer 2011 he was the head coach of HC Košice , then in the same position from the 2012/13 season at HK Nitra. With Nitra he won the Slovak championship in 2016 and then left the club.

Between summer 2016 and October 2017, Stavjaňa was under contract as head coach at ČEZ Motor České Budějovice , was dismissed in October 2017 and then took over the position of assistant coach at HK Nitra. There he has been head coach again since the beginning of the 2018/19 season.
