The 1997/98 season was the fifth regular staging of the highest Czech league in ice hockey , the Extraliga . In the play-off final, last year's winner HC Petra Vsetín prevailed 3-0 against HC Železárny Třinec and won the fourth title in a row. In the first division of the Czech Republic , HC Znojemští Orli won the play-off final and met HC Bohemex Trade Opava in the relegation .

mode

In 52 games, all teams play two complete double rounds, so each team has 26 home and away games. The teams in places 1 to 8 qualify directly for the play-offs, which are played in the best-of-five mode . For the teams in places 9 to 13, the season ends after the main round. At the end of the season, in addition to the playoffs, there will be a relegation, in which the last placed team of the Extraliga and the winner of the play-off final of the 1st division take part. In the best-of-seven mode with a maximum of seven games per team, the promoted to the extra league or relegated to the first division is determined.

Regular season

Before the start of the regular season, in June 1997, HC Olomouc sold its first division license to HC Becherovka Karlovy Vary . Karlovy Vary had initially failed in relegation due to promotion to the extra league, but was able to rise through the acquisition of the license. The HC Olomouc instead plays in the first division .
