Since 2010 he has been working as an assistant coach at HC Slavia Prague.
Career
Josef Beránek began his career in his hometown with HC Chemopetrol Litvínov , for whom he made his debut in the Czechoslovakian extra league during the 1987/88 season and contributed seven goals and four assists in his first season. In the summer of 1989 he was selected in the fourth round of the NHL Entry Draft in 78th place by the Edmonton Oilers , but played for HC Dukla Trenčín and HC Chemopetrol until the end of the 1990/91 season and increased his points yield from year to year.
His first stop in North America was the Edmonton Oilers, for whom he scored twelve goals and 16 assists in his rookie season 1991/92. At the beginning of the following season he was deported by the Oilers to their farm team, the Cape Breton Oilers in the AHL , before he was given in early 1993 together with Greg Hawgood to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Brian Benning . At the Flyers he was able to build on his good performance. During the lockout in 1994/95 he played 16 games for HC Dadák Vsetín before returning to Philadelphia. In the middle of the season, however, Beránek moved to the Vancouver Canucks , with whom he reached the second round of the playoffs . In March 1997 he moved to the Pittsburgh Penguins , for which he only played 13 games and spent the rest of the 1996/97 season at HC Petra Vsetín in the Czech Republic. At the end of the season he reached the Czech championship with the team from Vsetín . During the following season , Beránek stayed in Vsetín and again won the Czech championship. He also took part with the team in the European Hockey League 1997/98 , where this took third place and Beránek was appointed to the All-Star TEam.
In June 1998, the Penguins transferred the NHL rights to Beránek to the Edmonton Oilers, who gave Tony Hrkac and Bobby Dollas to the Penguins. With his old team, he then played his best season in the NHL, when he scored 19 goals and 30 assists in 66 games. In March 2000 he was sent back to Pittsburgh in exchange for German Titow and played for the Penguins until the end of 2001 , with whom he reached the conference finals of the playoffs. Before the start of the 2001/02 season he was signed by HC Slavia Prague and played very successfully for this club in the Czech extra league. In his second season, 2002/03, he won the Czech championship title with Slavia. Two years later, in the 2003/04 season , he was both top scorer and the best assist provider in the Czech league and repeated this performance in the playoffs. However, HC Slavia failed in the playoff final at HC Hamé Zlín .
In 2008 he became Czech champions again with Slavia Prague after becoming the best assists in the main round in the previous two seasons. In April 2010 he declared his playing career over and was accepted into the club's coaching staff.
International
Josef Beránek has participated in all major international championships in the course of his career. With the Czech national team , he won two bronze medals at world championships . The greatest success of his career was winning the gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano .
