The 1996/97 season was the fourth regular staging of the Czech extra league . In the play-off final, last year's winner HC Petra Vsetín prevailed against HC Vítkovice with 3-0 . In the first division of the Czech Republic , HC Kralupy nad Vltavou and HC Becherovka Karlovy Vary took the first two places, but neither of them managed to get promoted to the extraleague in the extraliga relegation.
mode
In 52 games, all teams play two complete double rounds, so each team has 26 home and away games. The teams in places 1 to 8 qualify directly for the play-offs, which are played in the best-of-five mode . For the teams in places 9 to 12, the season ends after the main round. At the end of the season, in addition to the playoffs, there will be a relegation round, in which the two last-placed teams from the Extraliga and the winners of the play-off semi-finals of the 1st division take part. In the best-of-seven mode with a maximum of seven games per team, the two promoted to the extra league and relegated to the first division are determined.
