The 2008/09 season was the 16th regular staging of the Czech extra league . In the playoff final, last year's runner-up HC Energie Karlovy Vary defeated the reigning champions HC Slavia Prague 4-2 and thus won the first Czech championship title in the club's history. New participant in the following season was the HC Kometa Brno , who acquired the license of the HC Znojemští Orli and thus rose to the extra league.

mode

In 52 games, all teams play against each other four times, each team has 26 home and 26 away games throughout the season. The teams in places 1 to 6 qualify directly for the play-offs, which are played in the best-of-seven mode. The teams in places 7 to 10 play off the other two playoff places in the best-of-five . The remaining four teams play a relegation round (play-out) in which the participant in the league relegation against the champions of the first division is determined in a further double round (6 home and 6 away games each).

Average audience

As in the previous year, HC Moeller Pardubice had the highest average attendance in the league , while HC Znojemští Orli's home games attracted an average of less than 3,000 spectators.

In the second quarter-finals, the runner-up in the main round, HC Moeller Pardubice , met HC Lasselsberger Plzeň , who had completed the main round in seventh place and had qualified for the quarter-finals in the pre-playoffs. The team from Pardubice went as favorites in this quarter-final series over a maximum of seven games, as Pardubice was one of the dominant teams in the main round and Plzeň had to deal with more games by participating in the pre-playoffs. In a very even series in which both teams won away, the team from Plzeň finally prevailed when Martin Adamský scored in the second extra time of the seventh final game , thus winning and qualifying for the semi-finals.

Semifinals

HC Slavia Praha - HC Lasselsberger Plzeň

In the first semifinal series, the first HC Slavia Prague met seventh-placed HC Lasselsberger Plzeň . After five games, last year's champions from Prague prevailed with 4-1 wins and again reached the championship final. In the fifth game, Martin Straka was able to equalize 5: 5 a second before the end of the game, but in the end Vladimír Růžička junior decided the party and thus the series in favor of Slavia Prague with a converted penalty.

Playouts

The playouts were played in a double round taking all points and goals from the main round with them. Last year's newcomer, BK Mladá Boleslav, was able to catch up many points on its competitors, but ultimately remained in last place. So this meets the champions of the first division , last year's relegated HC Slovan Ústečtí Lvi .

Relegation

In the relegation series for relegation and promotion, the last place in the playouts, BK Mladá Boleslav , met the champions of the first division , HC Slovan Ústečtí Lvi . The same pairing had existed a year earlier when the team from Mladá Boleslav were promoted to the extra league at the expense of Slovan Ústečtí Lvi.

In March and April 2009, BK Mladá Boleslav defeated the team from Ústí nad Labem four times. The latter team remains in the second division, the first division , while BK Mladá Boleslav holds the class.
