Jakub Štěpánek (born June 20, 1986 in Vsetín , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with HC Dynamo Pardubice from the Czech extra league since 2019 .
Career
Jakub Štěpánek began his career as a hockey player in the youth of HC Vsetín , for whom he was active in the U18 extra league until 2001. He then moved to HC Sareza Ostrava and played for its junior team until 2005. At the end of the 2004/05 season he made his debut for the men's team of the same club in the 1st division . Two years later he was appointed to the squad of the partner club, the HC Vítkovice Steel , for the first time and came to a total of five appearances in the top Czech division, the Extraliga . Also in the following season he mostly played for Sareza, but was also used for 230 minutes in the extra league.
From the 2008/09 season he was a permanent member of the HC Vítkovice Steel squad and was able to replace Marek Pinc as a regular goalkeeper during the season . Especially in the playoffs, he impressed with a good catch rate of 94.35% and an average goal against goals of 1.85. These achievements earned him the award rookie of the year and the appointment to the national team .
In the summer of 2010, Štěpánek was signed by SKA Saint Petersburg from the Continental Hockey League and was the goalkeeper of the army sports club for the following two seasons. In October 2012, the SKA signed Sergei Bobrowski an NHL goalkeeper, so that Štěpánek was no longer used. Therefore, he moved to HC Lev Prague at the end of October within the KHL . But even at HC Lev Štěpánek could not prevail, so that he signed a contract with Severstal Tscherepowez in May 2013 .
In December 2015, he was loaned to SC Bern until the end of the season after Cherepovets no longer had a chance of reaching the play-offs. Štěpánek was then used as a regular goalkeeper and in April 2016 with SC Bern Swiss champions .
In July 2017 he returned to the KHL when he signed a contract with HC Slovan Bratislava . He played there until 2019, after which he returned to HC Dynamo Pardubice .
International
From 2003 Štěpánek belonged to the extended circle of the Czech junior selection, but was not used in any major international tournament. It was not until 2009 that he was nominated for his first men's world championship and played the opening game against Denmark, where he achieved a shutout .
At the 2010 World Cup he won the gold medal with the national team, and the bronze medal in 2011 and 2012 .
