Mode changes

Comparison of the previous format (left) with the new regulation (right) based on the tournaments of the Men's World Cup

For the first time since the men's world championships in 2001 , the competitions were subjected to a far-reaching reform. The respective divisions retain their number of participants - the top division continues to play with 16 teams, divisions I and II continue to have twelve and division III with six - but the competition formats are changing fundamentally. The reason for the reform, which is also being introduced in the area of U20 and U18 juniors, is that, according to a study by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF, between 49 and 68 percent of all games in the 2010/11 season with five or more goals Difference ended.

In the top division, the intermediate and relegation rounds were canceled without replacement. Instead of the four preliminary round groups of four teams as before, the teams will play in two groups of eight teams from this year on. The four best teams in each group qualify directly for the quarter-finals; the worst team in each group is relegated to Division I. The mode is intended to give preference to the teams that play most consistently in the course of the preliminary round. Qualification for the intermediate round can no longer be dependent on just one game. The total number of games increases from 56 to 64 games.

In Divisions I and II, the twelve teams will continue to be divided into two groups of six teams. However, this no longer takes place on the basis of the world rankings, so that both groups are positioned as evenly as possible, but once on the basis of the final placements of the World Championships in 2011 . The six better-placed teams play in group A of the divisions in the first year, while group B contains the worse-placed teams. In the following years, the group composition is self-explanatory due to the promotion and relegation regulations.

Division III will continue to play in a group of six teams, with an optional qualification depending on the number of registered participants.

The mode changes also affect the promotion and relegation regulations of the individual divisions. The last two of the two preliminary round groups are relegated from the top division to Division IA. For the same reason, the first two will be promoted to the top division next year, while the sixth placed will be relegated to the IB division. In return, the winner of Division IB moves up to Division IA. The last one from Division IB is also relegated to Division II A. The promotion regulation of Division IB with one promoted and relegated also applies to divisions II A and II B. There is no direct relegated from Division III. Depending on the registration of new national teams, the last two teams placed in Division III of the previous year must compete with the newly registered nations in the qualification in order to play out the two free places.

The World Cup was awarded to Finland with 64 votes to 35. At the IIHF annual meeting in 2009, IIHF, Finland and Sweden announced that the two countries would host the tournaments for 2012 and 2013 together, as Sweden had won the 2013 World Cup.

Finland, the world champions of 1995 and 2011 , is hosting the tournament for the first time since 2003 . The Swedes, most recently world and Olympic champions in 2006, are hosting the title fights for the first time since 2002 . The venues are the capitals Helsinki and Stockholm . Helsinki has already hosted five World Cup tournaments. Stockholm has already hosted the world championships eight times, most recently when Finland won the first title in 1995. For the first time since 1930 , the world championship is being held in more than one country.

Grouping

The group division of the preliminary round was determined on the basis of the current IIHF world rankings after the 2011 World Cup . Due to the problem that, according to the world rankings, both hosts would have played in the same group and one of the teams would not have contested the preliminary round in their home country, the group division was adjusted accordingly and in accordance with the IIHF sports regulations:

Group H (Helsinki) Group S (Stockholm)
FinlandFinland Finland (2) RussiaRussia Russia (1)
CanadaCanada Canada (4) SwedenSweden Sweden (3)

* The respective world ranking is given in brackets.

mode

The 16-day world championship tournament was divided into two phases - the preliminary round and the final round.

The 16 teams were playing on their world rankings placing first in two groups of eight teams, a preliminary round ( Preliminary Round ). Three points were awarded for a win after normal playing time of 60 minutes, two for a win in the five-minute extra time or in the penalty shootout and one point for a defeat in the extra time or in the penalty shootout. In the event of a defeat after regular time, there was no point. In the event of a tie between two teams, the direct comparison decided. If more than two teams were tied, the following criteria decided. If only two teams were tied according to one of these criteria, the direct comparison decides again:

  1. Number of points from matches between teams with the same points against each other
  2. better goal difference from the games against each other,
  3. Number of goals from the games against each other
  4. Points, goal difference and goals against the next-better, non-tied team (if possible),
  5. Results against the team that is better but not tied (if possible),
  6. Placement in the IIHF world ranking list for 2011.

The four best teams in each preliminary group qualified for the quarter-finals and played the medal winners in the knockout system with the following semi-finals and finals ( playoff round ). The nations in the last rank of the respective group were relegated to Division I.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round of the World Cup started on May 4th in Helsinki with the game between the United States and France. Five more games followed on the opening day. The preliminary round ended on May 15th with the meeting between hosts and vice world champions Sweden and Latvia in Stockholm. On the final day of the preliminary round, a total of six games were also played. In between, at least four games were played on each day of the tournament.

Group H.

In Group H, the four teams that were most strongly staffed prevailed. Canada made it to the top of the group with 19 points. Only against arch-rivals from the United States, the maple leaves had in the extension beaten. Despite the victory, the Americans only finished second, as they also only defeated the later relegated Kazakhstan in overtime and lost to Slovakia. The defending champion and host Finland came in third after a good start to the tournament with four wins - level on points with Slovakia. The Slovaks, who found their way into the tournament better and better during the preliminary round, had lost the direct comparison.

The first quarter-final qualification since the 1995 World Cup was missed by the surprising French, who only failed in the last group game with a 4-5 defeat against the Slovaks. However, the tournament was disappointing for Switzerland, which only won against Belarus and Kazakhstan. Belarus ended up in seventh place, while Kazakhstan immediately relegated back to Division IA with just one point from seven games.

In total, the 28 preliminary round matches in the Hartwall Areena attracted 225,982 spectators, which corresponded to an average of 8,070 per game. The audience participation in the Finnish capital was therefore significantly better than in Stockholm .

Group S

The three favorite teams in Group S - Russia, Sweden and the Czech Republic - made it to the quarter-finals with ease. Russia remained free of loss points and even won the match against hosts Sweden, despite a 3-1 deficit in the meantime, with a clear 7-3. This was also the only defeat for the Swedes, who secured second place. The Czechs came in third with 14 points, even though they lost to the top two, immediately followed by the Norwegians. Norway surprisingly secured fourth place with 13 points, particularly favored by victories over their direct competitors Germany, Latvia and Denmark.

After a good start to the tournament, the Latvians missed the necessary points to win towards the end of the preliminary round. The same applied to Germany, who clearly lost 4:12 in the decisive game against Norway for the quarter-finals. Germany playful by the weak performance and the direct qualification for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia's Sochi . Relegation to Division IA had to go to Italy, which despite a victory over Denmark did not remain in the world group, as Denmark won decisive points against Latvia.

A total of 131,447 spectators attended the 28 preliminary round games in the Globen , which corresponds to an average of 4,694 per game. The number of spectators in the Swedish capital was 3,376 per game lower than in Helsinki .

Final round

The final round began after the preliminary round on May 17, 2012, so that all teams had at least one day off. Two of the quarter-finals were played in Helsinki, the other two in Stockholm. The games took place within the preliminary round groups, so there was no cross comparison this year. From the semi-finals on May 19, all the matches took place in Helsinki. The final and the bronze match were scheduled for May 20th.

Quarter finals

In the quarter-final pairings, the teams that had fewer points in the preliminary round than the competitor prevailed three times. While Finland prevailed against the USA in the final seconds, co-hosts Sweden were eliminated in the final phase against the Czech Republic. The victory of Slovakia over tournament favorites Canada was just as surprising. Only Russia prevailed appropriately against Norway and moved into the round of the last four.

  • The first quarter-finals brought a surprise when Slovakia beat Canada 4-3. The favored Canadians were 2-0 down right at the beginning of the encounter due to goals from Tomáš Kopecký and Miroslav Šatan . A hit shortly before the end of the third by Evander Kane brought the maple leaves back up. In the second period, things turned around and Canada took the lead thanks to goals from Jeff Skinner and Alexandre Burrows . The Canadians also remained decisive in the final section, but missed the decision. So the Slovaks equalized again to 3: 3 and caused the surprise with a power play goal from Michal Handzuš two minutes before the end of the game.
  • Strengthened by Alexander Ovetschkin and Alexander Sjomin , Russia reached the semifinals with a sovereign 5-2 victory over Norway. The Russians took the lead twice through Ovetschkin and Alexander Popow in the first period , but Per-Åge Skrøder and Patrick Thoresen - right after the restart of the second period - initially kept the game open. Only in the final third did Russia benefit from its playful superiority. Right at the beginning of the last third, Alexei Jemelin shot the Sbornaja again in the lead. They expanded this in the last ten minutes with goals from Nikolai Scherdew and Ilya Nikulin .
  • The third quarter-finals were extremely close and in the end dramatic, which the host defending champions Finland won 3-2 with a goal nine seconds before the end of the game. In the first half hour of the encounter, both teams neutralized each other on a high and intensive level before the Finns took the lead through Jesse Joensuu . The Americans, however, equalized just 21 seconds later with Kyle Palmieri . At the beginning of the final section, the United States scored the opening goal through Bobby Ryan . The Finns then increased the pressure and equalized with Mikko Koivu seven minutes before the end . Nine seconds before the end of the game, Joensuu finally took the chance to score the winner.
  • The last quarter-finals between Sweden and the Czech Republic, which the Czech selection decided in their favor in the final minute, also offered a tight run. Despite a good start for the Swedes with Loui Eriksson in the lead , the Czech Republic turned the game around in the first period with goals from Petr Nedvěd and Jiří Novotný . In the middle section, Martin Erat increased to 3: 1. However, the Swedes found their way back into the match within 90 seconds when Henrik Zetterberg cut the score before the third break and Jonathan Ericsson scored the equalizer shortly afterwards. As a result, the Czechs put up with the equalizer and won 29 seconds before the end of the game with a goal from Milan Michálek . Sweden missed the semi-finals for the first time in twelve years.

Semifinals

In the round of the last four teams, the Europeans were among themselves. In addition to the defending champion and host Finland, Russia, the number one in the world rankings, and the fifth-placed Czechs and tenth-placed Slovaks also qualified. In the first semifinals, the Russian team dethroned the defending champions Finland. In the second semi-final Slovakia caused another surprise and eliminated the Czech Republic.

Game scene from the game Finland against Russia
  • In the re-edition of last year's World Cup semi-final, this time the Russians had the better end to themselves and moved into the final. After the host Finns had started well and the Sbornaja had serious problems with their aggressive forechecking , the lead was followed in the eighth minute of the game by a deflected slap shot from Janne Niskala . Russia managed to equalize with their top scorer Yevgeny Malkin and even took the lead with a power play goal by Malkin shortly before the third break. After the break, the Finns came out of the locker room with a lot of pressure, but had no luck in the end. The Russians took advantage of this with further hits from Alexander Ovetschkin and the hat-trick hit from Malkin. In the final section, Russia quickly made everything clear with Denis Kokarew's 5: 1 and managed the lead, which Sergei Schirokow even expanded to 6: 1. In the end, the game ended 6-2, as Mikael Granlund scored again for the dethroned world champion four minutes before the end.
  • The "brother duel" between the Czech Republic and Slovakia decided Slovakia in their favor, which caused the next surprise. Both teams started the game cautiously and carefully, trying to avoid mistakes. Due to the similar playing arrangement, the teams neutralized themselves over large parts of the first period, but the 37-year-old Miroslav Šatan scored the opening goal , in which the puck slipped through the Czech goalkeeper Jakub Kovář under the leg protector. In the second third, the Czechs increased the pressure slightly and came to an equal level through Michael Frolík . In the final third, the Slovaks finally benefited from the mistakes made by the Czech Republic. In outnumbered Šatan came following a counterattack for his second game goal that meant the lead again for Slovakia after 41 minutes. The Czech Republic became more offensive, but had to accept the decisive goal to make it 3-1 by Libor Hudáček due to a mistake in the build-up of the game .

3rd place match

In the game for third place, last year's third and 2010 world champion , the Czech Republic, defended its position from the previous year and let the host and dethroned world champion Finland complete the home world championship without winning a medal.

The Czechs laid the foundation stone for winning the medal in the first third. Both teams went offensive in the game, in which Petr Průcha scored the lead for the Czech Republic in the power play in the 13th minute of the game . The Finns came in the person of Mika Pyörälä to equalize after 17 minutes, but Jiří Novotný in return, and David Krejčí shortly before the third break gave the Czech Republic an initially comfortable two-goal lead. In the middle third both teams neutralized each other over long distances, so that the Czechs could manage their lead without any problems. The final section clearly belonged to the World Cup host country with a shot ratio of 14: 1. The Finns developed a lot of pressure, especially due to the many time penalties from the Czechs, but only came after 49 minutes for the goal from Jussi Jokinen . Finland could not capitalize on another outnumbered game, so that in the end the Czech Republic won the bronze medal with a 3-2 victory.

final

The initial situation before the final reflected the classic initial situation between the favorite and the underdog. While the Russians had reached the final unbeaten with nine wins in a row, Slovakia had reached the final with surprising victories over Canada and the Czech Republic .

Slovakia took the lead after 66 seconds with a slap shot by their team captain Zdeno Chára . Russia took some time to process the early setback, but came to an equalizer after ten minutes through Alexander Syomin . Since both teams acted from a controlled defensive, there were no further hits in the first third. In the second round, the favorite finally reinforced his position. Alexander Pereschogin , who poked the puck over the goal line, and Alexei Tereschtschenko after a mistake in the Slovak build-up game gave Sbornaja a 3-1 lead during the third. Sjomin extended the lead to 4-1 a little later after another mistake by the Slovaks had preceded. In the final section, the Russians made everything clear early on when Pawel Dazjuk scored the 5: 1. After 50 minutes, Chára made a little cosmetic result for Slovakia with his second goal, but tournament top scorer Yevgeni Malkin made it 6-2 with his eleventh goal two minutes before the end of the game.

The Russian title win was the 26th for the country as a whole and the fourth after the collapse of the Soviet Union . After the victories at the world championships in 2008 and 2009 , Russia won three of the last five world championship tournaments. Canada was last able to do this between 2003 and 2007 .

The group A tournament was held from April 15 to 21, 2012 in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana . The games took place in the Stožice arena with a capacity of 10,000 . A total of 61,551 spectators attended the 15 tournament games.

With a flawless record of five wins in five games, hosts Slovenia, who were relegated from the previous year, managed to return to the top division. The Austrians also succeeded in getting back into the top division. Even before the final game day with the direct duel against each other, both teams could no longer be displaced from 1st and 2nd place. So it was all about the tournament victory, which the Slovenes secured with a victory. Third place went to Hungary with a clear gap. The Ukraine had to accept relegation to Division IB, which was of no use even after a final victory in the penalty shootout against Japan.

The group B tournament was held from April 15 to 21, 2012 in the Polish spa town of Krynica-Zdrój . The games took place in the 3,000-seat hala widowiskowo-sportowa . A total of 13,415 spectators attended the 15 tournament games.

The South Korean national team secured promotion to Division IA by winning the final tournament game over the host Poland. The South Koreans had already qualified for Division IA last year, but had to give up their place to the Japanese team due to an IIHF decision. Up until the last matchday, Poland had sovereign control of the tournament and was one point ahead of South Korea, who had given up one point in the game against the Netherlands. The Australians, who had only been promoted last year, had to make their way to Division IIA. They narrowly lost the decisive duels against Lithuania and Romania.
