In 2007 he moved to the youth department of HC Vítkovice Steel from the Czech Republic . In the 2007/08 season he played at the age of 14 for the first time for its U18 juniors in the top division of this age group. In the following year he was a regular player with the U18 juniors of HC Vítkovice national champions. In the 2009/10 season he played alternately for the U18 and the U20 juniors of the club, while the striker played during the summer break for the Sydney Ice Dogs in the Australian Ice Hockey League . He repeated this in the following season.
For the 2011/12 season Walker moved up to the professional squad of HC Vítkovice Steel. On October 9, 2011, he made his debut in the Extraliga against BK Mladá Boleslav , making history as he is the world's first Australian ice hockey player to play in the top professional league of a European country. He made one assist on his debut. A few days later he scored his first goal in the extra league. During the playoffs of the Czech youth leagues, he also played in the junior division again and won his second Czech title with the U18. The 2012/13 season he started again for Vitkovice in the Extraliga, but moved to the United States in January 2013, where he played with the Youngstown Phantoms in the United States Hockey League .
For the 2013/14 season, Walker moved to the AHL to the Hershey Bears , who act as the Washington Capitals farm team . As a result, the Capitals selected him in the NHL Entry Draft 2014 in 89th position and took him directly under contract in July 2014. At the beginning of the 2017/18 season , Walker was in the NHL lineup of the Capitals for the first time and thus became the first Australian in the history of the league. By the end of November 2017, he played seven games for the capital city club, in which he also scored his first goal, before joining the Edmonton Oilers via the waiver . After a little over two weeks and two NHL appearances in Edmonton, the Australian returned to the Washington Capitals via the same route.
With the Capitals, he won the Stanley Cup in the 2018 playoffs , although he was not immortalized on the trophy as he had only played one game in the playoffs. In July 2019, he subsequently joined the St. Louis Blues as a free agent .
