Delroy Chuck

Delroy Hawmin Chuck , QC , (born December 2, 1950 in Christiana , Manchester ) is a Jamaican lawyer and politician with the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP). He was Jamaica's Justice Minister from July 2011 to January 2012 .

Life and work

Chuck grew up in Clarendon , where he attended Ritchie's Primary School from 1955 to 1962. He then attended Kingston College until 1969. He then studied at the University of the West Indies (UWI), where he obtained a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1972 . He continued his studies at St. Catherine's College, University of Oxford , and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in law and civil law . He had practiced law in Jamaica since 1982, and later also taught law as a senior lecturer at the UWI. On August 18, 2011, he was appointed Queen's Counsel .

Chuck is married and has four children.

Since 1995 Chuck was active politically. In 1997 he was elected to the House of Representatives for the first time in the constituency of North Eastern St. Andrew for the JLP and was also able to maintain his mandate in the 2002 and 2007 elections. After the election victory of the JLP in September 2007, he first became Chairman of the House of Representatives ( Speaker of the House ). When Dorothy Lightbourne had to vacate her post as Minister of Justice and Attorney General during a cabinet reshuffle in mid-2011 and the two responsibilities were separated, Chuck took over the office of Attorney General . He was sworn in on July 5, 2011. After the electoral defeat of the JLP on December 29, 2011, he resigned from the ministerial office on January 6, 2012 and has been the opposition spokesman for justice, national security and electoral affairs since January 19, 2012.
