Dorothy Lightbourne

Dorothy Lightbourne (born October 6, 1938 in Aeolus Valley , St. Thomas ) is a Jamaican politician ( JLP ). She was Justice Minister and Attorney General ( Minister of Justice and Attorney General ) of Jamaica from September 2007 to June 2011 .

Life

Lightbourne attended Addey and Stanhope Grammar School in London and Wolmer's Girls' School in Jamaica. She then studied at the University of Hull and earned a Bachelor of Arts . She then first worked in Great Britain. Since returning to Jamaica in 1973, she has worked as an attorney in her own law firm .

politics

Lightbourne was from 1984 to 1989 Senator for the ruling Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) and was at times Deputy President of the Senate . From 2002 to 2007 she held a seat in the Senate again, this time as a representative of the opposition. In the parliamentary elections on September 3, 2007, the JLP won the government majority. Lightbourne was reappointed Senator and appointed to the government by Bruce Golding as Minister of Justice and Attorney General. She was sworn in on September 14, 2007.

She came under increasing pressure as a result of the affair surrounding the extradition of Christopher Coke to the USA and resigned from office in the course of a cabinet reshuffle at the end of June 2011. As a result, following a proposal by the Commission of Inquiry into the government's handling of the extradition proceedings, the offices of Minister of Justice and Attorney General were separated. The Justice Department took over Delroy Chuck , who was previously Speaker of the House of Representatives .
