Christopher Coke

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christopher "Dudus" Coke (born March 13, 1969 ) is a Jamaican suspected drug dealer .

The US authorities regarded Coke as one of the most dangerous drug traffickers in the world. According to the allegations, he heads the Shower Posse drug cartel , which has been linked to cocaine and arms trafficking . The group was selling marijuana and crack in New York , according to the US drug search . An extradition request had been in place since August 2009.

Coke was said to have good relations with the Jamaica Labor Party , which has ruled Jamaica since 2007 . There were demonstrations against his extradition in 2010. The Jamaica Gleaner newspaper reported that it was popular with many Jamaicans for enabling children to go to school, buying food and settling disputes.

Fight for extradition

To prevent his extradition to the United States , where he faces life imprisonment, his supporters fought for days with the Jamaican security forces in May 2010. Ultimately, Prime Minister Bruce Golding declared a state of emergency in parts of Kingston and the adjacent Saint Andrew Parish district . At least four people were killed in fighting between May 23 and May 25. Coke's supporters attacked three police stations , one of which went up in flames. The US State Department warned against traveling to Kingston and the surrounding area.

On May 26th, security forces combed Tivoli Gardens , the suspected whereabouts of Coke. The authorities put the number of deaths at 73 and spoke of almost 500 arrests.

On June 1, Coke's brother Leighton "Livity" Coke surrendered to the authorities.

Christopher Coke himself was recognized by police three weeks later, on June 22, 2010. At this point he was wearing a wig, had his beard removed, and was with a clergyman. He was arrested without resistance, waived his extradition appeal, and was extradited to the United States on June 24th.

Dudus has since been in the custody of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), a law enforcement agency under the United States Department of Justice , whose mission and goal is to prevent the illegal manufacture of drugs and the drug trade in the United States. He is serving his sentence in Edgefield Federal Prison until April 7, 2030 .

Shower posse

The Shower Posse was founded in the 1980s by Lester Coke, the father of Christopher Coke, and is centered in Tivoli Gardens. Lester Coke was arrested in 1987 and died five years later in custody under unexplained circumstances, shortly before extradition to the United States.

The group is credited with 1,400 murders in the United States and many acts of violence in Jamaica.

There was documented contact between Prime Minister Bruce Golding and the Shower Posse as Golding's constituency was in Tivoli Gardens. It is believed that he brokered construction contracts for the organization. This was also seen as the reason for the length of the extradition proceedings against Coke.
