NHL Entry Draft
|
The 2014 NHL Entry Draft took place on June 27th and 28th, 2014. It was the 52nd edition of this event . The venue was the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania, USA .
Available players
All players born between January 1, 1994 and September 15, 1996 were eligible for the Entry Draft. In addition, all undrafted, non-North American players over the age of 20 were eligible for the draft. Also available were those players who were elected in the NHL Entry Draft 2012 and had not signed an entry contract with their original draft club by the time of the Entry Draft 2014 .
Draft order
|
|
The draft order was determined on April 15, 2014 after the end of the regular season of the NHL season 2013/14 by the draft lottery. The 14 teams that did not qualify for the play-offs of this season (or their voting rights holders) took part. Each of the 14 teams had the chance to get the first right to vote. The worst team of the season had a 25% chance of winning the lottery, while the best team in the lottery only had a 0.5% chance. However , a special rule applied to the New Jersey Devils , who were only allowed to vote on the 30th and last place in the first round (see transfer of first-round voting rights ). If the Devils' lot had been drawn (1.5% chance, 11th place), the lottery would have been repeated until a team other than New Jersey had won the lottery.
The Florida Panthers won the lottery and moved up one place from second to first place in the draft order. This was the fourth time that they secured the rights to the first overall draft pick . The Buffalo Sabers , the worst team of the regular season, slipped from first to second place in the draft order.
The draft order of the 16 playoff participants was determined after the Stanley Cup final. The Stanley Cup winner Los Angeles was placed on position 30, the final opponent New York on position 29. The teams eliminated in the conference finals (Montréal, Chicago) were sorted into positions 27 and 28. The remaining playoff teams were set based on their standings in the regular season. The rule was that the team with the fewest table points was in 15th position. This draft order applied to all rounds of the Entry Draft, so the lottery only changed the order in the first round. In addition, the teams could acquire voting rights from other teams via transfers as well as give their own to other teams.
Transfer of first-round voting rights
date | From | To | annotation |
---|---|---|---|
5th July 2013 | Ottawa Senators | Anaheim Ducks | The Ottawa Senators transferred their first-round voting rights, as well as the players Jakob Silfverberg and Stefan Noesen to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for winger Bobby Ryan . |
5th March 2014 | New York Rangers | Tampa Bay Lightning | The New York Rangers gave up Ryan Callahan , the first-round voting right of the Entry Draft 2015 and a success-based voting right of this year's draft for Martin St. Louis . This success-based option was initially one for the second round and should only become one of the first round, provided the Rangers reached the conference final of the Stanley Cup play-offs. They succeeded on May 13th. |
June 27, 2014 | Anaheim Ducks | Vancouver Canucks | The Vancouver Canucks received Anaheim's first-round suffrage, players Nick Bonino and Luca Sbisa and a third-round draft pick in exchange for center Ryan Kesler and a third-round pick for the 2015 Entry Draft. |
June 27, 2014 | Chicago Blackhawks | San Jose Sharks | Chicago acquired San Jose's first- and six-round voting rights in exchange for their own first- and third-round voting rights, moving from draft position 27 to position 20. |
June 27, 2014 | Tampa Bay Lightning | New York Islanders | The Tampa Bay Lightning gave their first-round draft pick from the swap deal with the New York Rangers to the New York Islanders in exchange for two second-round voting rights. |
The New Jersey Devils were originally sentenced by the NHL to give up a first-round draft pick in 2011 , 2012 , 2013 or 2014 after signing an illegal contract with Russian winger Ilya Kovalchuk . In addition, the third-round draft pick for the 2011 Entry Draft was revoked. Since they used their first-round voting rights in the past three years, the voting rights for 2014 would have lapsed. On March 6, 2014, however, the sentence was reduced due to Kovalchuk's end of career in the NHL; the Devils were given the right to vote back, with the conditions that they are the last team in the first round to act and that the pick may not be included in barter deals with other teams. Furthermore, the fine was halved.
