Haydn Fleury (* 8. July 1996 in Carlyle , Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who since August 2014 with the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League is under contract and in parallel for their farm team , the Charlotte Checkers , in the American Hockey League on the position of the defender plays.
Career
Haydn Fleury was born in Carlyle and played in his youth for the Camrose Kodiaks and the Notre Dame Hounds, among others . In 2011, the Red Deer Rebels from the Western Hockey League (WHL) selected him in the WHL Bantam Draft in 43rd position, so that he made his debut for the team at the end of the 2011/12 season and joined the team at the beginning of the 2012/13 season belonged to. The defender achieved his best personal statistics in his second WHL year, scoring 46 points in 70 games . The Canadian was then selected in seventh position in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes , who provided him with an entry-level contract a few months later . Fleury made his professional debut towards the end of the 2014/15 season when he was used in a game by the Charlotte Checkers , the Hurricanes' farm team , in the American Hockey League and promptly scored his first goal.
Nevertheless, the defender returned to the Rebels in the WHL in the 2015/16 season and took part with the team as host at the Memorial Cup 2016 , in which he was elected to the all-star team of the tournament. As a result, Fleury switched permanently to the organization of the Hurricanes and spent a full season with the Checkers in the AHL before he earned a place in the Carolina squad in preparation for the 2017/18 season and finally in October 2017 National Hockey League (NHL) debuted. Nevertheless, he continued to play games for Charlotte in the AHL, with which he won the Calder Cup at the end of the 2018/19 season.
International
Fleury made his international debut in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2013 , where he finished ninth with Team Canada West . In the same year he won the gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2013 , before he won the bronze medal with the U18 national team at the U18 World Cup in 2014 and was named the best defender of the tournament. He also represented his home country with the U20 national team at the U20 World Cup in 2016 , where he came in sixth with the Canadian selection.
