Teuvo Teräväinen (born September 11, 1994 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League since June 2016 and plays for them in the position of the center .

Career

Teräväinen started his career with the youth club Helsingin Kojoottien in his hometown Helsinki . In 2008 he then moved to the youth department at Jokerit Helsinki, where he went through numerous age groups. In his first two years with the team in the Junior-C-SM-sarja he won the championship in the U16 age group. For the 2010/11 season, Teräväinen moved permanently to Jokerit's U20 team at the age of 16 and was Finnish runner-up in the Junior-A-SM-liiga in the following season. He scored twelve goals and a total of 20 points in eleven missions for the team.

At the same time, Teräväinen made his debut for Jokerit in the SM-liiga , Finland's top division, in the 2011/12 season . He finished the season with 18 points from 40 games, making him the top-scoring U18 player in the league. In the play-offs he was again successful with six points in nine missions and led Jokerit to third place as the second best scorer of his team. At the end of the season, Teräväinen was awarded the Jarmo Wasama commemorative trophy as SM-liiga rookie of the year . Before the NHL Entry Draft 2012 he was in the rankings of the National Hockey League behind the Swede Filip Forsberg in second place among the European field players. In the draft he was finally selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round in 18th place.

In the following season , the Finn was able to significantly increase his points and finished the regular season with 31 points from 44 games as the fifth best scorer of his team. In August 2013, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Blackhawks and then took part in the team's NHL training camp for the first time . However, he initially returned to Helsinki to gain more experience in the center position and to develop his defensive game. In the 2013/14 season he scored 44 points in 49 appearances for Jokerit and was the top scorer of his team. His 35 assists were also the second best value in the league.

At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, the Finn finally moved to North America and only started with the Blackhawks' farm team , the Rockford IceHogs , in the American Hockey League . During the season he established himself in the NHL squad and contributed ten scorer points in the playoffs, at the end of which the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup .

In June 2016, Teräväinen and Bryan Bickell were handed over to the Carolina Hurricanes , which in return sent a second-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2016 and a third-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2017 to Chicago. At the Hurricanes, he significantly increased his offensive statistics for the 2017/18 season, scoring 64 points in 82 games. He then signed a new five-year contract in Carolina in January 2019, which is expected to earn him an average annual salary of $ 5.4 million from the start of the 2019/20 season. In the 2018/19 season he was the best scorer of his team alongside his compatriot Sebastian Aho , reached the comference final with the Hurricanes and scored the 2-1 lead against the New York Islanders in the last game of the second playoff round .

International

Teuvo Teräväinen first played for the Finnish U16s in the 2009/10 season before representing Finland in the 2011 World U-17 Hockey Challenge the following year . With seven points from five games, he was the top scorer of his team. He then took part in the 2011 U18 World Junior Championship as the youngest player in the Finnish squad . At the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in the same year Teräväinen was top scorer of the tournament with ten points and reached fourth place with Finland. He also finished fourth with the national team at the U18 Junior World Championship in 2012 and scored eight points in six games over the course of the tournament.

At the U20 Junior World Championship 2013 Teräväinen was again among the best scorers of the Finnish team. His eleven points from six games exceeded only his teammates Markus Granlund and Joel Armia and the Canadian Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in the tournament . However, by finishing fourth in the group, Finland did not qualify for the final round and ended up in seventh place.

The following year, Teräväinen was named team captain of Finland at the 2014 U20 World Youth Championship in Malmö . He finally led Finland as the top scorer of the tournament with 15 points from seven games to win the gold medal for the first time since 1998. In the final against hosts Sweden, he prepared all three of his team's goals, including the winning goal by Rasmus Ristolainen in overtime . In addition to the title of best scorer, Teräväinen was voted into the All-Star Team. His 13 assists and his plus / minus balance of +11 were also tournament best.

After Teräväinen made his debut for the senior national team of Finland on the Euro Hockey Tour 2013/14 , he was also part of the Finnish squad at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 .
