Rasmus Ristolainen (born October 27, 1994 in Turku ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League since July 2013 . The defender was selected in eighth position by the Sabers in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft .

Career

Rasmus Ristolainen comes from the junior division of TPS Turku . At the age of 16 he made his professional debut for TPS Turku in the Finnish SM-liiga . During the rest of the season he mostly played for the club's U20 team. During the playoffs of the U18 championship, however, he strengthened the U18 team.

In the 2011/2012 season Ristolainen played 40 games for the first team of TPS Turku. At the end of the season, Ristolainen recorded three goals and five assists, had a minus 21 record and 78 penalty minutes. On average, he played 16:33 minutes per game. In two playoff games in which he participated, he reached a minus 2 balance. In eight games that he played for the U20 team, he scored four assists (plus 4 balance). During the KHL Junior Draft 2012 he was drawn in 12th place overall.

In the 2012/13 season, Ristolainen completed 52 games for the professional team.

Ristolainen was the team's top defender scorer. He scored three goals and 12 assists, reached a minus 7 balance and was occupied with a total of 32 penalty minutes; on average he played for 21:40 minutes. At the Junior World Championships he scored a total of two goals and four assists in six games (plus 5 balance sheet). During the playoffs of the U20 team, in which he played five games, he scored two goals and one assist (minus 5 balance).

During the NHL Entry Draft 2013 he was selected by the Buffalo Sabers in eighth place and established himself in their NHL lineup in the 2013/14 season. In October 2016, the Finn signed a new six-year contract with the Sabers, which should bring him an average annual salary of 5.4 million US dollars.

International

Ristolainen represented his home country with the Finnish U17 national team at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2010 and 2011 and at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2010 and 2011 . During the 2011/12 season he played for Finland in the U18 and U20 World Championships. At the U20 World Cup , he played in all seven games, where he posted three assists (plus 1 balance). At the U18 World Cup he was elected assistant captain and achieved two goals, one assist and ten penalty minutes in seven games.

In 2013 he played at the U20 World Junior Championship in Ufa , scored six points and finished seventh with the U20 selection. A year later, at the U20 World Junior Championship in Malmö , he scored a total of three goals. He scored one of them in the extension of the final against Sweden and thus secured the gold medal for the Finnish U20 selection. In recognition of his achievements, he was named the tournament's best defender and was voted into the event's All-Star team.

After Ristolainen made his debut for the senior national team of Finland at the Euro Hockey Tour 2014/15 , he was also part of the Finnish squad at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 .
