Zemgus Girgensons (born January 5, 1994 in Riga ) is a Latvian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Buffalo Sabers from the National Hockey League since 2012 . The Center is the 14th position they drafted highest Lette at NHL Entry Draft . He also plays for the national team of his country and took part in several world championships and the 2014 Winter Olympics with them.
Career
youth
Zemgus Girgensons began his athletic training in the "EVHS Edmund Vasilyev Hockey School" in Riga, operated by the former professional Edmunds Vasiļjevs . In 2009 he moved to the United States and played for the Green Mountain Glades in a junior league. The following year he moved to the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the USHL and came there in his first season on 49 points in 51 games, in which he won the Clark Cup with the team . In the 2011/12 season, his last with the Fighting Saints, he led the team as captain and achieved a point-per-game rate of over one.
Buffalo Sabers
After he was selected in the KHL Junior Draft in 28th position in 2011 , the Buffalo Sabers drafted him in the NHL Entry Draft 2012 in 14th position and thus higher than any other Latvian. The previous record holder was Sandis Ozoliņš , who was selected in 1991 by the San Jose Sharks in 30th position. Buffalo had already selected Michail Grigorenko in 12th place and had to hand over the 21st and 42nd draft picks to Calgary in order to also secure the 14th pick and thus Girgensons. In July 2012 the center signed an entry level contract with the Sabers.
He spent the 2012/13 season completely with the Sabers farm team , the Rochester Americans , in the AHL . There he completed 61 games and got 17 points. With the beginning of the 2013/14 season Girgensons was in the NHL squad and made his NHL debut against the Detroit Red Wings on October 2, 2013 , where he scored his first goal directly.
International
With the youth teams of the Latvian national team , he participated in the U18 World Cup 2010 in the top division and in the U20 World Championships 2011 , in Division I as the third best scorer (behind Belarusian Mikalaj Susla and his Latvian compatriot Juris Upītis ) and goalscorer (behind Susla and the British Jack Prince ) contributed significantly to the rise of the team from the Baltic States, and in 2012 participated in the top division. Girgensons made his debut for the senior national team at the 2013 World Cup and scored his first international goal against Slovakia during the tournament . In 2014 he also took part in the Olympic Games .
