James Stephen "Steve" Smith (born April 30, 1963 in Glasgow , Scotland , United Kingdom ) is a former Scottish- Canadian ice hockey player and current coach who played 938 games for the Edmonton Oilers during his active career between 1980 and 2001 , Chicago Blackhawks and Calgary Flames played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . During this time he won the Stanley Cup three times with the Edmonton Oilers . Since July 2018, Smith has been working as an assistant coach with the Buffalo Sabers in the NHL.
Career
Smith was in the Scottish capital Glasgow born, but grew up in Canada Cobourg in the province of Ontario on. In the junior division he played from 1980 to 1983 for the London Knights and Brantford Alexanders in the Ontario Hockey League . During this time he was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft in the sixth round in 111th position.
After Smith had gained first experience in the American Hockey League with the Oilers' farm teams in the 1983/84 and 1984/85 seasons , he made the leap into the Edmontons squad for the 1985/86 season . With the team he failed this season in the second round of the play-off at the big competitor and eventual champions Calgary Flames , where the defender in the seventh game of the series with an own goal - the goal was well written for Calgary's Lanny McDonald - the defeat and with it the departure of Edmonton was partly to blame. In the following years Smith developed into a permanent fixture in the defensive network of the Oilers and won the Stanley Cup with the Oilers in 1987, 1988 and 1990 respectively . In the summer of 1991, the defender moved to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for defender Dave Manson and a third-round vote in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft .
With the Blackhawks, Smith reached the Stanley Cup final again in the 1991/92 season and in the following year he had his personal best season with 57 scorer points. The two successful years were followed by four years marked by injuries. Two broken legs and permanent back problems finally moved Smith to sit out after the end of the 1996/97 season . Smith found a job as assistant coach with the Calgary Flames under head coach Brian Sutter for the 1997/98 season . For the 1998/99 season Smith returned to the ice for the Flames, but resigned from his coaching position. After a nearly injury-free year, Smith was appointed team captain for the 1999/2000 game year . However, since the back problems quickly returned, the defender only played 20 games. This continued into the following season, so that on December 7, 2000, at the age of 37, he retired from active sports.
After a long break, Smith found a job as a scout with his ex-team Chicago Blackhawks in the summer of 2008 , before returning to the dugout for the 2010/11 season . Under the head coaches Tom Renney , Ralph Krueger and Dallas Eakins , he worked as an assistant coach at the Edmonton Oilers until the summer of 2014. In the summer of 2014 he moved - continuing to work in the same position - to league competitor Carolina Hurricanes , who built up a new team of coaches around head coach Bill Peters . In Carolina he was active for four years before he and Peters were dismissed and a little later in July 2018, the Buffalo Sabers hired him in the same position .
International
Smith represented his adopted home Canada in the 1991 Canada Cup , which the Canadians won by two victories over the United States in the best-of-three final series. The defender played all eight tournament games and prepared the equalizer for the 3: 3 final in the preliminary round match against the USSR . In addition, he collected 30 penalty minutes in the course of the tournament.
