Jeffrey "Jeff" Skinner (born May 16, 1992 in Markham , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been with the Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League since August 2018 . Previously, the left winger spent eight years with the Carolina Hurricanes , who selected him in seventh position in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and in whose jersey he was honored in 2011 with the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best rookie in the NHL.
Career
Jeff Skinner, who also pursued a career in figure skating until he was twelve, played during his junior years from 2007 to 2008 with Tyler Seguin for the Toronto Young Nationals in the Greater Toronto Hockey League . He was then selected in the first round at position 20 by the Kitchener Rangers at the OHL Priority Selection Draft 2008 . In August 2008 he signed his first contract with the Rangers and played for the first time in the Ontario Hockey League in the 2008/09 season . In his rookie season , Skinner was the team's third-best scorer with 51 points in 63 regular season games. In the following season he was able to improve significantly and ended the regular season with 90 points scorer , with which Skinner took seventh place in the league.
His 50 goals in the regular season were the second best value within the OHL, only Bryan Cameron of the Barrie Colts with 53 goals was more successful. In the playoffs, the Kitchener Rangers prevailed in the Conference semifinals in seven games against the London Knights . In the Conference Finals, the Rangers already led 3-0 wins against the Windsor Spitfires , but the series was lost with four defeats in a row. In the playoffs Skinner was the best scorer of his team with 33 points in 20 games and only Taylor Hall of the Spitfires was more successful with 35 scorer points. That same season, Skinner also took part in the OHL All-Star Game .
Although he had had a strong season, the left-shooter was only placed in the final ranking by the NHL Central Scouting Service in 34th place of the most hopeful talents for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft . This did n't stop the Carolina Hurricanes from picking him in seventh position in the first round. On September 21, 2010, Skinner signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Hurricanes. On October 7, 2010, he made his debut for the Hurricanes in the game against the Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League . A day later, again against the Minnesota Wild, he posted his first assist and was the game's only successful shooter in the shootout .
In his sixth NHL game, he scored his first goal against the Los Angeles Kings . On October 29, 2010, Skinner had his first game with three points when he scored two goals and provided an assist against the New York Rangers . He was then voted the best player in the game. At halfway through the 2010-11 regular season , Skinner was number one among the NHL's top rookies scorers, ahead of Logan Couture of the San Jose Sharks and Taylor Hall of the Edmonton Oilers . For the 2011 NHL All-Star Game , he was nominated as one of twelve rookies who took part in the Honda NHL SuperSkills .
On January 26, 2011, after the injury-related loss of various players as a participant in the NHL All-Star Game, he was also nominated for Team Staal , where he met his teammates Cam Ward and Eric Staal in a team . Skinner went down as the youngest participant in the history of the NHL, replacing Steve Yzerman , and is now considered a new teen idol . In the same month, he was also named NHL Rookie of the Month . The 2010/11 season ended Skinner as the best rookie with 63 points and was the second best scorer of the Hurricanes behind Eric Staal, who missed the playoffs due to a loss in the last game of the season against the Tampa Bay Lightning . After the 2010/11 season, Skinner was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best new professional in the National Hockey League.
Over the following years, Skinner established himself as one of the team's top scorers and also took on the role of assistant captain until he was handed over to the Buffalo Sabers in August 2018 . In return, Cliff Pu , a second-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2019 and a third and a six- round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2020 moved to Carolina. In the Sabers jersey, Skinner hit the 40-goal mark for the first time in the 2018/19 season before signing a new eight-year deal in Buffalo in June 2019 that is expected to earn him an average annual salary of $ 9 million.
International
Skinner first represented his home country at the 2009 World U-17 Hockey Challenge in Canada. In six games he scored six points and won the gold medal. In the same year he also took part in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament . For the 2011 World Cup , Skinner was appointed to the senior national team for the first time. In his first appearance on April 29, 2011 against Belarus Skinner was successful with a goal and an assist . A few days later, he had a three-point game in the encounter against France . In the further course of the tournament, however, he reduced his performance against stronger opponents and failed with the Canadian selection in the quarter-finals against Russia .
