Artemi Sergeyevich Panarin ( Russian Артемий Сергеевич Панарин ; English transcription: Artemi Sergeyevich Panarin ; born October 30, 1991 in Korkino , Russian SFSR ) is a Russian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League since July 2019 . He was previously active in the NHL for the Chicago Blackhawks and the Columbus Blue Jackets .
Career
Artemi Panarin began his career as a hockey player in the youth department of Vityas Chekhov , for whose professional team he made his debut in the newly founded Continental Hockey League in the 2008/09 season . In his rookie year , he prepared one goal in five games. In the following season , the winger ran parallel for the professional team of Vitjas Chekhov in the KHL, as well as for his junior team in the multinational youth league Molodjoschnaja Chokkeinaja Liga . In the KHL he scored eight points in 20 games, including one goal, in the MHL 47 points in 41 games.
In the 2010/11 season Panarin finally prevailed in the professional team of Vitjas and earned a regular place. He scored 26 points scorer in 38 KHL games, so that he aroused the interest of other KHL teams and was loaned to Ak Bars Kazan in January 2012 . For the 2012/13 season, he initially returned to Vitjas, before he was given to SKA Saint Petersburg in January 2013 in exchange for a right to vote for the 2013 KHL Junior Draft . In the KHL play-offs in 2013 he scored 9 points in 14 games, so his contract was extended by two years at the end of April of the same year.
After those two years, he signed a two-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League in April 2015 . Panarin established himself there straight away and was the team's second-best goalscorer (30) and assists (47) in the 2015/16 season. He also led the league- wide rookie scorer list because he was still classified as a rookie according to the regulations due to his lack of NHL experience . At the end of the season he won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best rookie of the season and was also awarded the Kharlamov Trofi as the best Russian actor in the NHL. In December 2016, Panarin signed a new two-year contract in Chicago that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 6 million.
In June 2017, however, the Russian, along with Tyler Motte and a six- round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2017, was given to the Columbus Blue Jackets , which in return sent Brandon Saad , Anton Forsberg and a five-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2018 to Chicago . Panarin also established himself as a regular scorer in Columbus and led his new team in the 2017/18 season with 82 points, while in the NHL he reached over 1.0 points per game for the first time. At the same time, he set a new franchise record with this value and with his 55 templates , which he increased to 87 points and 59 assists in the following year.
As a result, Panarin developed into one of the most sought-after free agents in the league in summer 2019 , as he was unable to agree on a further contract with Columbus. Finally, in July 2019, he signed a seven-year contract with the New York Rangers that should earn him an average annual salary of approximately $ 11.6 million. At the time of signing, he was receiving the second highest salary in the NHL after Connor McDavid . In the following season 2019/20 the Russian increased his personal statistics again to 95 points from 69 games, so that he was placed among the top 5 scorers in the league . Together with Leon Draisaitl and Nathan MacKinnon, he is also one of the three finalists of the Hart Memorial Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Awards .
International
For Russia , Panarin took part in the 2011 U20 World Youth Championship , where he and his team won the gold medal. He contributed to winning the title with three goals and two assists in seven games. He scored two of these goals in the final against Canada , including the goal that made it 4: 3. He made his debut for the senior national team at the Euro Hockey Tour 2013/14 before winning the silver medal with Sbornaja at the 2015 World Cup . He also represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 . At the 2017 World Cup , he won the bronze medal with the team, was named top scorer of the tournament and as a result was named the best attacker and was elected to the All-Star team .
