Korkino ( Russian Коркино ) is a Russian city in the Urals . It is located in the Chelyabinsk Oblast and has 38,597 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

history

Korkino was founded in 1746 as a small settlement on the bank of the Chumlyak ( Чумляк ) river . According to legend, the place name comes from the first settler named Afanassi Korkin. The first census in the place in 1795 showed a population of just over 100 inhabitants. In the 19th century, Korkino officially held the status of a Cossack settlement and was mainly shaped economically by agriculture and fishing. Korkino had this status until 1920.

At the beginning of the 1930s, brown coal deposits were developed near Korkino , which gave the place a new meaning. Already in 1933 Korkino was converted into a work settlement and received city status in 1942.

In addition to coal mining, there are several industrial companies in Korkino, including a reinforced concrete, a cement and a glass factory, as well as a textile industry and a confectionery factory.
