Karabash ( Russian Карабаш ) is a city in the Chelyabinsk Oblast ( Russia ) with 13,152 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the eastern edge of the Southern Urals about 90 km northwest of the Oblast capital Chelyabinsk .

Karabash is administratively directly subordinate to the oblast.

The city is on a branch line from the station Pirit the 45km from Kyshtym at the 1896 opened railway Yekaterinburg connected -Tscheljabinsk. It is a former narrow-gauge railway , opened in 1910 , which was converted to broad-gauge after 1945.

history

Karabasch was founded in 1822 as a gold prospecting settlement . In 1834, a gold-bearing copper gravel deposit was discovered in the vicinity and the Soimanowski Sawod copper smelter was built on this basis . In 1907 a second copper smelter was opened and another one was built on Mount Karabash ( Turkish for black head , referring to the nearby mountain).

On June 20, 1933, the place received city rights.

Karabash has a local museum.

economy

The city-building company is the Kupferhütte ( Karabaschmed AG ), which was responsible for considerable environmental pollution in the past. The mountain on the eastern outskirts has lost all vegetation due to acid rain .
