The Schickhardt High School is the older of the two high schools in the town of Herrenberg in Baden-Württemberg . The school opened in 1962 and is located in the Längenholz school center southeast of the city .

Naming

The school was named after the Renaissance master builder Heinrich Schickhardt (1558–1635), who was born in Herrenberg in 1962 . Later two other bearers of the name Schickhardt associated with Herrenberg were also regarded as namesake:

history

The Schickhardt Gymnasium sees itself in the tradition of the Latin school in Herrenberg, first mentioned in 1382 .

Until 1962, the Herrenberger Gymnasium was housed in the rooms of today's adult education center. On March 22, 1962, the Schickhardt Gymnasium building was opened as the first school of what would later become the Längenholz school center. The school had 309 students at the time.

The grammar school was one of the first schools in Baden-Württemberg to introduce project teaching . This takes place at the end of the school year.

The baby boom cohorts were one of the reasons for the high number of students in the 1970s. The school reached its highest level in the school year 1977/1978 with around 1,800 students in 59 classes who were taught in shifts. This development led to the construction of the second Herrenberger Gymnasium, the Andreae Gymnasium .

Entrance facade designed in 1992

Wilhelm Schickard has been depicted on the three-storey entrance facade since June 1992. The redesign of the 140 square meter facade was the result of an initiative by students who took on the artistic execution themselves under the guidance of two art teachers. This was preceded by a ten-year dispute about approval and financial subsidies with the city administration, the mayor and the architect who had defended the originally completely gray wall he had designed.

In July 2001, both Herrenberg high schools organized a project School as State , in which the pupils simulated a state with its institutions and companies. The state was called "Gäurasien".

In autumn 2008, school as a state took place again at the Schickhardt Gymnasium. The state was called "Schickago" and had the currency "Schickel".

The project took place for the third time in summer 2015. This time the state was called "McSchicko" and the currency was "Schickos".

Furnishing

The school owns a model of the calculating machine designed by Wilhelm Schickard and the handheld planetarium he designed . In front of the school in 1962 an 11 ares large, up to 2.80 meters deep and 720 cubic meters of water was created, which was leased for many years as a fishing water. The school later took care of the lake. Since the lake, which was initially sealed with a layer of clay, was constantly losing water, it was sealed with foil in 2005 during a renovation project carried out as a student project.

Student exchange

Since the early 1990s, Schickhardt-Gymnasium has been running student exchanges with Wenatchee Highschool in Wenatchee (Washington, USA) as part of the German American Partnership Program .
