Mini Schulz (* 1966 in Stuttgart as Andreas Schulz ) is a German bass player who works in the field of classical music as well as jazz and popular music . He teaches at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts . In addition to the double bass and the electric bass , he also plays the violone .

Live and act

Schulz received first prizes in the competitions “ Jugend musiziert ” and “ Jugend jazzt ”. He studied double bass in Stuttgart, Vienna and New York with Ludwig Streicher , Ulrich Lau , Gary Karr , Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Ron Carter , and electric bass with Alphonso Johnson and Abe Laboriel . There were also courses with Ron McClure and Christian McBride .

Schulz initially worked with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra and as a solo bassist with the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra in Heilbronn . From 1993 to 2006 he worked as a bass player and project manager with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra , with whom he carried out several productions and recorded albums (Shostakovich / Vasks / Schnittke Dolorosa ). In jazz he played a. a. with the SDR Bigband and in the bands of Klaus Graf ( Cornichon ), Wolfgang Dauner , Peter Lehel and with Stéphane Grappelli or Les McCann . Together with the Budapest jazz pianist Kálmán Oláh , he created the album Sketches from Cello Suites , an award-winning adaptation of Bach's cello suites for piano and double bass. He also accompanied Max Greger Laurie Anderson , Lou Reed , Nina Corti , Paul Kuhn , Caroll Vanwelden ( Sings Shakespeare Sonnets ) and, since 2002, Helen Schneider again and again .

After previously teaching as a lecturer, he was appointed professor and (at that time) head of the pop course at the Stuttgart University of Music in 2006. He also appeared as a solo bassist in the orchestra of the Ludwigsburg Palace Festival and as a violonist in the field of baroque chamber music. He also held numerous honorary posts: In 2003, he became artistic director of the Stuttgart region pop office. From 2003 to 2007 he was the artistic director and initiator of the “Jazz for Children” series in Stuttgart. In addition, he has been the deputy director of the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Association since 2010. Since 2006 he has been a founding partner and managing director of the BIX jazz club in Stuttgart, in which he also performs. Since 2008 he has been on the artistic direction of the Stuttgart festivals “ Jazzopen ” and “Boomtown”. In addition, Schulz is currently (as of 2017) one of the two vice-presidents of the Baden-Württemberg State Music Council .
