Ludwig Streicher (born June 26, 1920 in Vienna ; † March 11, 2003 ibid) was an Austrian double bass player and music teacher.

Life

Ludwig Streicher, son of the innkeeper, composer and music teacher Franz Xaver Streicher (1891–1965) in Ziersdorf , first studied violin, then from 1934 at the Vienna Music Academy cello and double bass and graduated in 1940 with a diploma. Subsequently he was solo double bass player and from 1943 also solo cellist in the Cracow State Orchestra. From 1946 to 1973 Streicher was first double bass player with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna Court Music Orchestra .

Streicher was awarded the title of professor in 1962 . From 1966 he taught at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts , then in 1992 he accepted a teaching position in Madrid at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía. He gave a double bass school and a number of lecture pieces ( transcriptions ) in the music publishing house Doblinger and held numerous master classes. He also began an international solo career and toured around the world.

Streicher used his own bow position, with which he could reproduce difficult pieces by Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf or other compositions of the 18th century with a special expression. Because of his outstanding playing technique, he was also called “Paganini of the double bass” or “Thousand fingers”. Paul Angerer , Gottfried von Eine , Paul Walter Fürst , HK Gruber , Fritz Leitermeyer , Marcel Rubin and Erich Urbanner dedicated compositions to him.

His grave is in the Hietzinger Friedhof in Vienna (group 60, row 1, number 15).
