Helmut Schiff

Helmut Adalbert Josef Schiff (born January 30, 1918 in Bratislava , † December 20, 1982 in Linz ) was an Austrian composer and music teacher .

Live and act

After studying philosophy and musicology at the University of Prague and the University of Bratislava (1936 to 1938), he studied from 1939 to 1943 at the University of Music and Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" in Leipzig with Robert Teichmüller and Felix Petyrek piano and with Johann Nepomuk David Composition . In 1941 he also studied piano at the Vienna Music Academy with Emil von Sauer and taught at the Leipzig Music School.

He was married to Helga Riemann from 1944 to 1977 . The couple lived from 1944 onwards, with a six-year professional residency (1953 to 1959) in Hamburg until the 1970s, initially in Gmunden and later in Altmünster .

The marriage resulted in the sons Hans Christian (* 1949) and Heinrich Schiff (* 1951). After the divorce in 1977, Helmut Schiff lived in Linz until his death in 1982.

Helmut Schiff taught composition and piano at the Bruckner Conservatory from 1946, with interruptions through employment in music and secondary schools until his death in 1982.

His estate is administered by the library of the Bruckner Conservatory , with scholarships and prize money being paid out annually.

Works

His works include four symphonies, numerous concerts, piano pieces, chamber music and choirs. Helmut Schiff was a member of the MAERZ artists' association .
