Emil von Sauer (composer)
Emil von Sauer (born October 8, 1862 in Hamburg , † April 27, 1942 in Vienna ) was a German composer , pianist and music teacher .
Life
His mother gave him piano lessons at an early age . In Saint Petersburg he met Anton Rubinstein , for whom he auditioned. On his recommendation he became a student of Nikolai Rubinstein at the Moscow Conservatory from 1879 . In the years 1884 to 1885 further studies followed with Franz Liszt in Weimar .
From 1901 he worked in Vienna at the Conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde , where he led the piano master class. He carried out this activity with interruptions until his death. In addition, he made extensive concert tours from the 1880s to the mid-1930s, which took him through all of Europe and as far as the United States and helped him to achieve international recognition.
He edited works by Chopin and Liszt, but also Scarlatti , Schumann and Brahms . In 1917 Sauer was ennobled for his successes.
His compositional work includes piano concertos , piano sonatas , concert etudes , piano pieces and songs . He was also the editor of piano pedagogical literature and wrote an autobiography in 1900 . He is considered to be one of the last representatives of the Franz Liszt school.
Von Sauer was the father of the lawyer Emil von Sauer . He was married twice. With his second wife, the concert pianist Angelica Morales (1911–1996), he had two other sons, Julian and Franz. Von-Sauer-Straße in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld is named after him, in Vienna since 1952 Sauergasse .
