history

The label is named after Hyperion , one of the titans of Greek mythology. It was founded in 1980 by George Edward Perry (nickname "Ted"). First he brought out music recordings by the English composers Robin Milford , Alan Bush and Michael Berkeley , all composers of the 20th century, on LP ( long-playing record ). A first bestseller was a record with music by Hildegard von Bingen , performed by medievalist Christopher Page and his group Gothic Voices . The current head of the company is Simon Perry, son of Ted Perry.

2004 trial

In 2004 music editor Lionel Sawkins sued Hyperion. Sawkins was demanding royalties on his musical copyrights.

Hyperion insisted that the editions were not original compositions. The case went in favor of the plaintiff. His demand was relatively minor; Hyperion had a cost of over £ 100,000 from the fall. The future of the publisher was therefore uncertain at the time. Musicians, consumers and composers donated to enable Hyperion to survive.
