Marc-André Hamelin (born September 5, 1961 in Montreal ) is a French-Canadian pianist and composer .

Life

He studied in Philadelphia with Yvonne Hubert , Harvey Wedeen and Russell Sherman.

Hamelin is particularly dedicated to the works of little-known composers of the 19th and 20th centuries, but also plays the standard international repertoire. He is known for playing rarely performed pieces with extreme technical and interpretational difficulty (for example by Godowsky , Ornstein , Roslawetz , Catoire , Ives and Sorabji ). His interpretations of the works of Charles Valentin Alkan and Paul Dukas caused a sensation . As one of three pianists, he also recorded Leopold Godowsky's 53 studies on F. Chopin's etudes . This recording received the Gramophone Instrumental Award in 2000.

He has recorded many albums for the Hyperion label , including works by the composers mentioned as well as works by Albeniz , Brahms , Busoni , Chopin , Debussy , Eckhardt-Gramatté , Grainger , Haydn , Janáček , Kapustin , Korngold , Liszt , Joseph Marx , Medtner , Reger , Rzewski , Shchedrin , Shostakovich , Schubert , Schumann , Scriabin , Szymanowski and Villa-Lobos .

Hamelin also appears as a composer of piano music. Between 1986 and 2009 he created a cycle of twelve études in all minor keys ( 12 études in all the minor keys ), which he performed in full for the first time on 23 August 2010 in Husum as part of the music festival Rarities of Piano Music . In 2010 he recorded the etudes along with other original compositions on the CD Études . He premiered his Variations on a Theme of Paganini from 2011 on August 22, 2011, also in Husum. For the ARD competition 2014, Hamelin wrote the cycle of variations Pavane variée on the dance song Belle qui tiens ma vie by the Renaissance composer Thoinot Arbeau as a commissioned work and compulsory piece for all semi-finalists in the piano category .

In Germany, his Original Compositions in the Tradition of Nancarrow have also been published so far .
