Thoinot Arbeau (born March 17, 1519 in Dijon , † July 23, 1595 in Langres ; actually: Jehan Tabourot ) was a wealthy canon who spent most of his life as a member of the clergy at Langres Cathedral . He gained notoriety not through his work as a priest, but as the author of a book about the dances of his time.

Tabourot used the anagram of his name in 1588 for the publication of his dance book Orchésographie et traité en forme de dialogue, par lequel toutes personnes peuvent facilement apprendre et pratiquer l'honneste exercice des dances . After introductory remarks on military music, drums, and marching, the book contains detailed instructions for dances common in Arbeau's time, such as: B. Branle , Galliarde , Pavane . This is followed by information on social dances like Basse dance , Allemande and Courante , as well as some details about folk dance forms like Morris Dancing and Canarie .

The writer Étienne Tabourot was his nephew.
