Cinquecento Ensemble

Cinquecento Ensemble

The Cinquecento ensemble has existed as a professional vocal ensemble since 2004. Its name is derived from the Italian word Cinquecento , which stands for the 16th century. True to the example of the imperial court orchestras in the Renaissance era, the singers in the six-member ensemble come from five European nations. This fusion of different, centuries-old vocal traditions takes into account the humanistic ideal of the varietas and has a say in the ensemble's special sound style.

The ensemble's repertoire mainly comprises works from the period 1450–1610 as well as commissioned compositions by living composers. The main focus here is on the rediscovery of forgotten music from around the imperial court orchestra.

The processing of this largely unknown repertoire takes place - in cooperation with renowned musicologists - in the form of a CD series published by the British label Hyperion Records as well as numerous appearances at renowned festivals. The ensemble's recordings have so far been honored (sometimes several times) with awards such as the Pasticciopreis or the CD Compact 'Renaissance' Award , recommended on the shortlist of the German record critics in 2008 and 2009 and nominated for the Grammophone Award in 2008 and 2009 .

In September 2009 Cinquecento was awarded the Deutschlandfunk award. Cinquecento was artist in residence for a year and received support in the form of a large recording project made possible by the nationwide broadcaster.
